Practicum Program

Application Process

Students complete and submit a Practicum Application after attending a student orientation. The Practicum Application can be found on the Student Forms page. Part I and Part II of the application must be completed by all students. All applications must include a professional statement and current resume. Norman students submit signed originals in person or by mail to the Practicum Office in Norman. Tulsa students scan documents and submit through D2L. See this link for directions on submitting paperwork through D2L. Part III is a proposal for Employment-based Practicum Placement and must be completed by students requesting a practicum in their place of employment.

All Practicum Application forms, including Part III (the EBPP proposal) are available on the Student Forms page.

For an example of a professional statement, click the appropriate link for a Word or PDF document (Example Professional Statement or Example Professional Statement). Visit the University of Oklahoma’s Career Services or Smith College’s site for resources on resume writing in Social Work and sample resumes.

Applications must be submitted by established deadlines or they will not be considered. Incomplete applications cannot be reviewed and will be returned to the applicant for completion. Application deadlines are listed on the Practicum Calendar, available on the website.

Interviews
After submitting an application, students meet with the Practicum Coordinator or his or her representative to discuss possible sites. Students are referred to one or more possible placement sites for pre-placement interviews.  Because prior contact by students tends to cause confusion for Practicum Instructors, students are NOT to contact possible agencies or instructors independently unless it is as a part of development of an Employment-Based Practicum Proposal.  Students interested in particular sites should indicate that interest on the application.

Securing placements
After interviewing at assigned sites and verbally accepting placement at one, students complete and submit two forms:

  • Student Placement Form
  • Memorandum of Understanding-Attachment A.

Both documents MUST be completed in full to secure a placement.  Both documents are available on the Student Forms page of this website. Forms MUST be received by the deadline or the student’s site will not be secured and the student may be denied enrollment in the practicum course for the upcoming semester. In Norman, students must submit originals in person or by mail. In Tulsa, students submit through D2L. For deadlines, see the applicable Practicum Calendar.

Other requirements
The OUSSW requires that all students are covered by malpractice liability insurance. Verification of coverage MUST be on file in the Practicum Office prior to beginning a placement. Most students will find it best to secure coverage through membership in NASW. Look on the web at www.socialworkers.org for more information.

The OUSSW also requires that students placed at medical sites be HIPAA trained and to submit verification of training to the Practicum Office. To fulfill this requirement, students should click on the HIPAA link on the Practicum webpage, proceed with the online training, print out the certificate of completion, and submit the certificate to the Practicum Office prior to beginning a placement.

Some sites, particularly medical, have additional requirements with which the student must comply. It is the student’s responsibility to find out exactly what those requirements entail and then meet them by the date that practicum begins. For a checklist of possible requirements at medical sites, see the Appendix of the Practicum Manual

Beginning Practicum
No hours will count toward the required total numbers in practicum until all required documents are on file in the Practicum Office and all requirements specific to a site are met. This includes verification of malpractice liability insurance and HIPAA training, when required. All students should provide their site with a copy of their verification of malpractice liability insurance and a copy of their MOU-Attachment A.

For deadlines, see the UndergraduateFoundation Year (Fall & Spring), Foundation Year (summer), or Concentration Year Practicum Calendar.
