TEXT |
Scene Technology (ST), Third
Edition by Richard Arnold
Backstage Handbook (BH), Third edition by Paul Carter
|
OBJECTIVES |
| Stagecraft is a class designed to introduce
you to the process of theatrical production with emphasis on specific
technical aspects. By semester's end you will have developed a variety
of competencies that will aid in your understanding of technical
theatre. Specifically, you will have a basic understanding of safety,
set construction, tools and materials, the physical theatre/audience/stage
relationship, theatre vocabulary, props, the handling of scenery
(and much more!). Plus you will receive a wealth of hands-on practical
stagecraft experiences.
The stagecraft experience is intended to introduce and involve
you in the process of mounting live theatre. It is essential to
your understanding of the total art of theatre and provides you
with the foundation for exploration in a variety of technology-based
occupations.
The stagecraft class is essential to the creation of quality theatre
at OU. Over 3600 person hours will be applied this semester by this
class alone.
You are a valuable member of the production team starting
TODAY! (yesterday??)

COURSE REQUIREMENTS |
- You are expected to do all reading before it is discussed in
class.
- You will practice non-biased behavior. Be supportive of your
class. One person's joke can be another person's insult. Refer
to the Non-biased Behavior Sheet
- You will arrive to class a bit early. Once the class door has
closed you are not allowed to enter out of deference and respect
for those who have arrived on time. Please do not knock or ask
for an exception. If you have a far away class or other specific
conflict please see me immediately. Questions?
- You will be allowed four absences total (including the first
day of class, whether excused or not). Two full weeks of class.
Overly generous perhaps, but each additional absence will cause
your grade to decrease by one full grade level. If you have a
medical or personal emergency see me immediately. Questions?
- Assignments will be due on the given date. Assignments are
turned in at the beginning of class. Late work is not accepted.
If you experience a personal or medical emergency you will see
me with appropriate documentation in hand ASAP.
|
LAB/SCENE SHOP CREW |
You will have a lab of four hours per week
x15 weeks = 60 hrs (with drudge make-up hour's possible but not advised
during finals week). Sometimes Saturday and/or evening calls WILL
be necessary (hey it's theatre!). The lab is just like your classes.
Be on time. Be prepared. Please refer to the Lab. Requirements Sheet.
|
CREW ASSIGNMENTS |
You are required to function on a running
crew for one of the four (or five) main stage or Old Science Hall
productions this semester. YOU will fill in a request sheet to let
us know your show preferences. We cannot guarantee your choices
but we will attempt to follow your request as much as is possible.
Crew assignments are posted on 9/8/03(?). CHECK THE CALL BOARD!
It will be a three to five week commitment depending upon the position
and the show. It will require evenings, weekends, mornings, and
holidays depending upon the show. Approximately 60 hrs. Please refer
to the Crew Sign -Up Sheet.
If you cannot do a crew you must drop the class immediately!

AND FINALLY |
| Any student in this course who has a disability
that may prevent him or her from fully demonstrating his or her abilities
should contact me personally as soon as possible so we can discuss
accommodations necessary to ensure full participation and facilitate
your educational opportunity. |
Please feel free to talk to any of us (TD, SSC, GA's). We are here to help
you to learn as much as possible in a safe, supportive environment. Ask
questions, share ideas and concerns because we continually learn from each
other. |
