Biographical Sketch of the Creator of the Collection
Harry Culver had a long and distinguished career in Oklahoma journalism. After working at various small state papers, he joined United Press International in 1950 and served as a political and government reporter covering Oklahoma politics. In 1984, he retired from the wire service and became the public information officer for the Oklahoma Office of State Finance. He worked for this office ten years. The recipient of numerous awards, Culver was inducted into the Oklahoma Journalism Hall of Fame in 1979 and received the Society of Professional Journalists Lifetime Achievement Award in 1998. He died on February 13, 2005, in Oklahoma City.
Scope and Content of the Collection
Consisting of 15 cubic feet of material, the collection consists of wire copies, newspaper clippings, correspondence, press releases, speeches, and reports either written or gathered by Culver during his
years with United Press International. Files are arranged alphabetically. Because Culver covered Oklahoma politics, the collection contains a wealth of information on key state political leaders as well
as various issues confronting the Oklahoma Legislature over the years. The collection was given to the Carl Albert Center in 1992 by Culver. A small photograph collection is also included. A
folder-title inventory to the manuscript collection can be accessed through the box below.
