The materials in this section are printed and handwritten articles, reports, obituaries, and tributes, letters to the editor, reviews and descriptions.  Some are in draft form.  The arrangement is chronological; topics include monopolies, railroads, Oklahoma and Indian territories, the writing of the Oklahoma Constitution, Star Route frauds, and the death of James H. Lane.  There are also descriptions of early Lawrence, Kansas, and of the San Juan area in Colorado. See also the inventory for the oversize boxes.

F 1: Report concerning Railroads (n.d.; before 1859). Page two of report concerning meeting in Southbridge, Massachusetts, concerning subscription for bringing the railroad to Southbridge.  Handwritten.  1 page.

Draft of tribute sent by SC to Mrs. SC April 6, 1888, with request that she copy it for publication by Mr. Chalfont.  (Letter is included in this folder.) Re:  praise of Dr. Miller's hatred of deceit and his honesty.  Handwritten.  3 pages; both sides.

F 10: Tribute to the Memory of Hon. Chester Thomas (1891). Draft of "Hon. Chester Thomas; A Tribute to his Memory" re important Free-State leaders, Thomas's part in Free-State struggle, brief description of country at time of Thomas's birth, SC's friendship with Thomas, and Topeka's debt to Thomas.  Handwritten.  13 pages.

Re:  SC's answer to reply of "GAJ," division of the mind into several parts and faculties, inability of metaphysicians to discover laws regulating the succession of ideas, opposition of self-love and passion to harmonious operation of the mind, need for open discussion to reconcile differences of opinion concerning subject.  Handwritten.  2 folded sheets; both sides.

VI.  SPEECHES AND WRITINGS BY OTHERS (1848-1895)

Materials filed here are primarily speeches, addresses, or sermons.  The large majority of them are collected in bound volumes with no continuous page numbers and no tables of contents, making individual speeches rather difficult to locate.  The collection accession folder contains lists of the contents of these volumes in the order of their appearance in the volume.  Many of the speeches were given in Congress to honor a recently deceased Senator or Representative.  Others concern particular legislation including tariffs, taxes, Reconstruction, impeachment, suffrage, national finances, banks and currency, Indian affairs, rights of naturalized citizens and citizens abroad, the Freedman's Bureau, military bounties, protection of public lands, and the basis of representation.  Some are addresses by governors to their state legislatures, and a few are sermons.  Speakers represented here include Rev. Henry Ward Beecher, James G. Blaine, O. H. Browning, W. P. Fessenden, Andrew Johnson, George W. Julian, William D. Kelley, Samuel C. Pomeroy, William H. Seward, John Sherman, William M. Springer, Thaddeus Stevens, William M. Stewart, Charles Sumner, and Eli Thayer.
