Filed in the Map Cabinet are a large number of maps which Sidney Clarke had collected. Over half are Civil War maps, many of them showing army positions. Other topics include the area of the Crimean War, mining areas, public surveys of various states and the Mexican border, and railroad routes or areas of proposed routes. All maps are one sheet unless otherwise noted.
1. "New Map of the Frontier Provinces of Turkey, Russia and Austria, the Black Sea, &c. Detailed Map of the River Danube, showing the Fortified Towns, &c. along its course" (1854). Lith. by Bevan & Beell. New York: Willmer & Rogers.
2. "Route of Mr. Cyrus W. Field's Proposed Cable Between the United States and China (n.d.). New York: G. W. & C. B. Colton & Co. Shows proposed route of cable from San Francisco via Honolulu and Yedo, Japan, to Shanghai. Includes cable distance in nautical miles.
3. "Map showing Telegraph Lines in Operation, Under Contract and Contemplated to Complete the Circuit of the Globe" (1855). New York: G. W. & C. R. Colton & Co. Includes distance in nautical miles of Cyrus Field's proposed cable route between United States and China. Map is badly damaged.
4. "Map of that Portion of the Boundary between the United States and Mexico from the Pacific Coast to the Junction of the Gila and Colorado Rivers...and the Gila from near its intersection with the Southern Boundary of New Mexico...." (February 19, 1855) Senate Ex. 55, 33rd Congress, 2nd Session. Includes sketch of the Port of San Diego (1849-1850) and land profile from the Rio Grande to the Gulf of California and from Rio Grande to the junction of the Gila and Colorado Rivers. Shows territory acquired under the Gadsden Treaty, 1854. Map is damaged. (Filed in special location because of its size.)
5. "Map showing the progress of the Public Surveys in the Territories of Kansas and Nebraska to accompany Annual Report of the Surveyor General, 1860" (1860). 6. "Map of Public Surveys in California to Accompany Report of Surveyor Genl., 1860" (1860). New York: J. Bien. Includes list of private grants "finally surveyed." Map is damaged.
7. "Central or Smoky Hill Route, the Gold Regions of Western Kansas, mapped from actual survey by O. M. Tennison, C. E., Leavenworth, Kansas" (n.d.). Cincinnati, Ohio: Middleton, Strobridge & Co., Lith. Includes locations of Potawatomie [sic], Delaware, Kaw, and Sac and Fox Reserves; Arapahoe and Cheyenne Indians, Leavenworth and Santa Fee [sic] Road. Map is included in and attached to pamphlet entitled, Report and Map of the Superintendent and Engineer of the Smoky Hill Expedition.... (1861). Lamont and Honorable Russell A. Alger, Secretaries of War. Republished by order of Congress, with additional position maps, under the direction of Honorable Elihu Root, Secretary of War. Maps were prepared by the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Park Commission (1896-1901) and they were compiled and drawn by Edward E. Betts.
