This collection contains a wealth of black-and-white and color images of Speaker Carl Albert. In addition to pictures of Albert with family, staff, and constituents, the collection also contains photographs of the speaker with VIPS of the era. These include congressional colleagues Wayne Hays, Wilbur Mills, Mike Mansfield, Tip O'Neill, Jim Wright, Sam Rayburn, John McCormack, Hale Boggs; presidents, vice-presidents, and cabinet members including Richard Nixon, Lyndon Johnson, John F. Kennedy, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, George Bush, Nelson Rockefeller, Hubert Humphrey, and Henry Kissinger; with Oklahoma governors David Hall and George Nigh; with such celebrities as Bob Hope, Paul Newman, Arthur Ashe, and Lorne Greene; with foreign officials and dignitaries such as Queen Elizabeth, French President Giscard D'Estaing, Spanish King Juan Carlos, the Philippine's Imelda Marcos, and Jordan's King Hussein; and with Apollo 15 astronauts. Many photographs document congressional trips to eastern Europe (various times in the early 1970s), East Asia (1971), China (1975), England (1976 to obtain a copy of the Magna Carta), Germany (1959), South Korea, and Saudi Arabia. Several also depict events, such as the 200th Anniversary of the Continental Congress, the Magna Carta ceremonies in the U. S. Capitol, the centennial safe opening with President Ford in Washington, D. C., the National Governors Conference (1973), the Democratic Presidential Campaign Kickoff (1972), various Democratic National Conventions (1960s-1990s), various ceremonies honoring Albert, numerous parades and dedications (including the McAlester, Okla., Armed Forces Day celebrations), and a number of events during the speaker's retirement. There is also a series of images of the 1975 Apollo-Soyuz space mission. Photos of Oklahoma interest include those of Lake Texoma (1948), the Rockwell North American plant in Tulsa (1972), the Oklahoma State Technical Training School (1964), towns in the southeastern part of the state (1950s), numerous public works buildings and structures, developmental reading classes in public schools, and President John F. Kennedy's visit to Robert S. Kerr's Big Cedar ranch (1961). Noticeably absent are photographs of Albert's political campaigns and the 1968 Democratic National Convention that he chaired.
