With the dissolution of the uneasy union between the Western Allies and the USSR, the Cold War began. As former allies became enemies, and vice versa, domestic mistrust descended into the paranoia labeled “McCarthyism." The postwar witnessed a second attempt to "return to normalcy," but behind the calm facade social and political forces gathered for another round of change. Interstate highways provided for the swift movement of armed forces. America became a nation on the move as the automobile replaced mass transit. Regional and rural-to-urban population shifts produced an increasingly rootless society. |
