Upon completion
of course work, Fellows usually spend one year on Capitol Hill as American
Political Science Association Congressional Fellows. Fellows generally
serve as legislative assistants to Members of Congress and divide their
time in Washington between the House and the Senate. During their time
in Washington, Fellows participate in seminars and programs sponsored by
the APSA Congressional Fellowship program. The year in Washington provides
Fellows with an unparalleled opportunity to gain firsthand knowledge of
the Congress, pursue their dissertation research, conduct interviews with
Members of Congress and congressional staff members, and meet other political
scientists who study the Congress. Additionally, Fellows are able to take
a trip to a Member's congressional district and participate in a week-long
exchange with Canadian Parliament interns in Ottawa.
