Think Big with The Big Event
NORMAN, Okla. – On April 8, 2006, over 4,000
Sooners will unite on the North Oval of the University
of Oklahoma’s campus to provide much-needed services
to community-based organizations. This year marks the
seventh annual community-service effort known as the
Big Event: OU’s campus-wide day of community service.
The Big Event’s main purpose is to say "thank-you"
to the Norman-Oklahoma City area for the unsurpassed
support they show to our university. As the official
day of community service at OU, The Big Event strives
to strengthen our friendship with our surrounding community.
Big Event is proud to better the lives of the hundreds
of thousands of people that rely on the services and
facilities at which we volunteer. In three words, the
University of Oklahoma is truly "committed to community."
The Big Event helps over 250 vital community organizations,
such as veteran hospitals, schools, animal shelters,
churches and many more, accomplish what they have not
had the resources to do on their own. In the past, volunteers
have painted, landscaped, cleaned, and even put together
kits for foster children. Volunteers are sent out in
groups of their own choosing or paired up as a group
of individuals. Many clubs, Greek organizations, and
even groups of friends participate.
Big Event kicks off at 8 a.m. on the North Oval located
on Boyd Street & University with an opening ceremony
where President David L. Boren will speak. The 4,000
plus volunteers then will disperse into the community
to their respected locations.
