The
Buffalo in the Mall and Buffalo
Dreams
Book Description from Booklist
When they see the
TV account of the white buffalo's birth, the Bearclaws, like
many other contemporary Native American families, plan a pilgrimage
to see it. Sarah knows the rare white buffalo traditionally brings
good luck and prosperity, but at the site, her little brother
Joe angers the calf's mother and Sarah must summon her courage
to rescue him. In that dangerous yet insightful moment, she realizes,
"Magic doesn't make you do something special; when you do
something special, it makes magic." In awe and reverence,
Sarah leaves her cherished dream catcher for the calf. The story
develops slowly and unevenly, but the final scene is exciting
and emotionally moving. Dramatic, full-color illustrations present
the unfolding action from a variety of perspectives. Directions
for making a dream catcher and "The Legend of the White
Buffalo Woman" are appended, but no source is cited. Even
in large collections, white buffalo lore is elusive, so this
interesting combination of story, folklore, and craft may also
have reference value.

Green Snake Ceremony
Book Description from Horn Book
The book describes
a Shawnee ceremony of blessing in which a green snake is briefly
put into a child's mouth to ensure good luck and health. One
set of illustrations shows a contemporary Shawnee family. In
a forced attempt at humor, another set of pictures follows a
silly cartoon-style snake, living under the house, who panics
when he overhears conversation about the ceremony. the resolution
involves substituting a garter snake.
Rainbows, Head Lice and Pea Green Tile
Book Description from amazon.com
It's your life
told here, dear teacher, with all its glories, warts, joys, and
heartaches. The poems of Brod Bagert, America's performing poet,
chronicle the frustrations of the profession, as well as their
transformation into unexpected victories that make it all worthwhile.
The cast of characters includes the second grade from hell, that
hopeless, control-freak-of-a-colleague, the faculty restroom,
the custodian, Rambo teacher, and even the cafeteria food. Brod
speaks in the voice of the classroom teacher, and the voice rings
true. Here's a perfect gift - for yourself or for a teacher you
love. Illustrated by illustrator/author Kim Doner, winner of
the Oklahoma Book Award for Best Illustrated Book.
