ST. ANSELM OF CANTERBURY ENEWS

“When you come to play bingo with us, it feels like
Christmas.”
Dora – Whispering Pines Resident

++++++++++RUNDOWN++++++++++

BINGO WEDNESDAY JANUARY 28th at 2pm. St. Anselm’s
will call bingo for our friends at WHISPERING PINES on
this date. We could really use your help. So, come
for the fun! Meet at St. Anselm’s at 1:30 and carpool,
or we’ll see you there at 2pm. This is the principal
outreach ministry of our community.

EPISCOPAL STUDENTS ENJOY SOCIAL NIGHT. Last Thursday,
around a dozen Canterburians gathered to watch movies
and enjoy friendships as the first social night of the
new semester was held. Student social nights are open
to any OU student under 30 years of age. There is
usually no set agenda, just fun and fellowship with
your fellow Episcopal students. Watch the Enews for
updates on the next event.

FROM THE ORGAN BENCH
It's great to see everyone back at St. Anselm. Choir
rehearsals began Jan. 12, & we welcome new member
Patrick. Also, it's great to have Helen & Michael
back with us in the choir. Many thanks to Clint Davis
for his lovely solo Sunday before last, The Birds, by
Benjamin Britten. It's always a treat & blessing to
hear him sing.

All music lovers are invited to the choir retreat,
Sat., Feb. 7, at St. John Episcopal parish, Norman.
We'll have the opportunity to sing in their chapel,
with some excellent acoustics, I'm told. Also, we'll
have time for eating, laughing & getting to know one
another. See me for details.

Music trivia question: How many children did J. S.
Bach have?

Choir Rehearsals: Sun., 4:00 p.m. & Mon. 7:30 p.m.

See you Sunday. Suzy

EPISCOPAL STUDENTS ADOPT UGANDAN PEN-PALS. In response
to a request for penpals, Marlon Breaux, Tess Wright
and Debbie VanWinkle will be establishing
long-distance writing relationships with three
elementary students from Uganda (West Ankole Diocese).
Many students in Uganda would relish the opportunity
to hear from friends in Oklahoma. If you have an
interest in establishing such a relationship, contact
Michael. As Hugh Long reminded the community last
night, a letter takes about a month to get from here
to there, so we’re not talking about a whole lot of
work, rather a whole lot of care for a young brother
or sister on the other side of the globe. The
relationship between West Ankole and the Diocese of
Oklahoma is the principal mission of the Volunteer
Oklahoma Outreach Mission, a twenty-plus year old
organization designed to nourish our community, prayer
and common faith.

RELIGIOUS STUDIES TO SPONSOR VIOLENCE SPEAKER. The
Department of Religious Studies at OU will sponsor
Rabbi Bradley Hirschfield’s presentation of “When God
Goes to War: Religious Violence in the World Today.”
Tuesday, February 10th at 7pm. Meacham Auditorium.
Hirschfield is the Vice President of the National
Jewish Center for Learning and Leadership in New York
City.

CHRISTIAN LEADERSHIP SERIES STUDIES “STEWARDSHIP OF
CREATION” Last Monday, the Christian Leadership Series
viewed a film entitled “Big Blue Planet.” The
discussion focused on the Christian obligation to care
for the environment, including our air, water and
natural resources. For the next several weeks, we
will be studying “Stewardship of our Relationships.”
“Iris” is an excellent film on the life and
relationships of Iris Murdoch, famed British writer,
university lecturer and prolific and highly
professional novelist. In her works, Murdoch dealt
with everyday ethical or moral issues, sometimes in
the light of myths. As a writer, she was a
perfectionist who did not allow editors to change her
text. Murdoch produced 26 novels in 40 years, the last
written while she was suffering from Alzheimer
disease.

How are we called to be stewards of our relationships?
How are relationships part of God’s Creation? How do
our relationships embody the living and loving God?
How do we learn to see the world through the loving
eye versus the arrogant eye? These are a few of the
questions we’ll be massaging over the next two weeks.

Join us at 5:30 on Mondays for a free dinner. The
dialogue begins at 6:15 and we always finish by 7:30.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE. If you are in need of prayer or
someone you know desires prayer, please let us know
and we will include these special intentions during
our celebration of the Sunday Eucharist. You may send
your prayer requests to us by responding to this
Enews.

NEEDED: ST. ANSELM’S MEMBERS TO REPRESENT THIS
MINISTRY at the annual Senior High Conference. Tess
Wright will be going and Kate Carney will already be
there. Help these two represent this community at the
Conference which will be held at St. John’s in OKC on
Feb. 27, 28. Contact Michael or Mark if you’re
interested and available.

KITCHEN HELP NEEDED. Calling all cooks! Drop Will
Hanner an email and volunteer to cook or clean up
sometime during the spring semester. Will Hanner:
