FORMER PRESIDENT
KATE EMIG PREACHES AT ST. A’S. On
the
eve of her second year in seminary,
former St. Anselm
President Kate Emig was the featured
preacher at the
September 4th Sunday Eucharist.
“One of the first
things I discovered (at OU) was
this place, St.
Anselm’s. Here, I found a community
and a home away
from home. But this community is
different from any
other I have ever experienced. Here,
I felt
comfortable and secure and at the
same time, I was
pushed to explore the world beyond
my comfort zone. I
was taught to scrutinize my beliefs
and theology and
formulate my own understanding of
faith in the world.”
Emig spent the summer break participating
in a new
internship for seminarians sponsored
by St. John’s
Episcopal Church in Norman. “College
is a time to
experience new things, to try out
different ideas, and
to embrace newfound freedoms. It
is an opportunity to
take a leap outside of your comfort
zone and be open
to whatever may await you.” Emig
is the first
seminarian to be directly sponsored
by a university
ministry in the diocese of Oklahoma.
FIRST CANTERBURY
COMPLINE A SUCCESS. Twelve people
gathered last Wednesday for the
first “Canterbury
Compline,” a casual rite of praise
and prayers led by
laity. Services will be held each
Wednesday evening at
9:30. Several guitarists and vocal
leaders have been
authorized to lead the liturgy which
borrows from the
Book of Common Prayer, the New Zealand
Prayer Book,
Taize and other traditions. The
late scheduling is
designed to reflect the classroom
and study
inclinations of students. All are
welcome, however.
CONFIRMATION: AN ADULT AFFIRMATION
OF THE VOWS OF
BAPTISM. In preparation for receiving
the sacrament of
Confirmation, several members of
the community will be
meeting each Sunday afternoon at
3pm for discussion
and instruction. Bishop Robert Moody
will preside at
the Sunday Eucharist on October
24th and administer
the sacrament, the heart of which
is the baptismal
covenant. If you are interested
in becoming a “full
member” of the Episcopal Church,
or would simply enjoy
learning more about living a mature
Christian life,
join us for the next six weeks as
we study and explore
our faith together. Chaplain, Michael
Athey and
Deacon, Kay Greenshields will both
be participating in
this formative process.
STUDENT ASSOCIATION
TO MEET. This Thursday (September
9) at 8:30 pm in the living room
at St. Anselm's the
student association will hold a
meeting/ social to
discuss what activities we would
like to do for fun or
for serious matters. It will be
pretty informal, and
we will hang out until everyone
is gone. If you want
to bring snacks, feel free to do
so. Please come and
partake in our fun and excitement!
Hope to see you
all Thursday!
Tess
FREE ISLAM LECTURE
SERIES TO BE HELD. OU is offering
a free public lecture series about
Islam. The lecture
series is titled "Islam Under
Siege: An Invitation to
Interfaith Dialogue" and will
be held Thursday,
September 9 at 7:30 pm in Meacham
Auditorium, Oklahoma
Memorial Union. There is more information
about who
the guest speakers will be on the
flyer on the
bulletin board downstairs in the
dining room at St.
Anselm's.
GAME DAY BRUNCH
HELD FOR GAME DAY PATRONS. St.
Anselm’s staff held a brunch for
those parking at
Canterbury on game days. Patrons
pay $200 per season
to park at Canterbury. The funding
is important to the
community and helps pay for programs
such as the Urban
Immersion Program and worship materials
such as sheet
music. Hugh Long will be serving
as Game Day host this
season. Members of the community
are encouraged to
stop by St. Anselm’s on game days
and say hello to our
parking friends. While parkers have
complete access to
the facilities during home games,
this should not
inhibit use of the building by regular
Canterbury
members.
FIRST BINGO –
WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 15. The principal
outreach of St. Anselm’s is our
ministry to the
Whispering Pines psychiatric nursing
facility on East
Robinson, Norman. This will be the
third year we have
participated in this ministry which
is a joint effort
between the community events staff
at Whispering Pines
and the St. Anselm’s service/ministry
team. Meet your
friends at St. Anselm’s around 1:45
and carpool to the
nursing home. Bingo begins at 2pm
and is concluded by
around 3pm. Canterbury collects
bingo prizes
throughout the year to be awarded
at the event which
is scheduled every other Wednesday
during the fall and
spring terms.
CHRISTIAN LEADERSHIP
SERIES TO STUDY “HUMAN LABOR AND
THE JUSTICE OF GOD.”
The first Christian Leadership Series
will be held
this coming Monday, September 13th.
The video
presentation and discussion will
focus on issues of
global child labor and a Christian
response. The
Christian Leadership Series is a
weekly
study/reflection model meant to
challenge your view of
the world and God’s role in it.
The series meets each
Monday during the semester. We will
begin on Monday,
September 13 at 5:30pm with a free
community dinner.
The dialogue begins at 6:15. We’ll
be finished by
7:30pm.
LAYREADERS AND
EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS

Anselm’s. If you

during the
worship service or would like to
administer the
chalice at the time of communion,

Greenshields by responding to this
email.
CHOIR TO BEGIN
ANTHEMS. The St. Anselm choir, under
the direction of Suzy Hayes will
begin choral anthems
at the offertory beginning Sunday,
September 12. If
you are interested in joining the
choir, simply come
to a rehearsal: Sundays at 4pm or
Mondays at 7:30
(immediately after Christian Leadership).
Join us.
It’s a blast.
KITCHEN STAFF
NEEDS YOUR HELP. Will Hanner and
Kate
Carney, our kitchen managers are
asking for your help
in cooking our Sunday meals and
cleaning up afterward.
The menu is set and all the ingredients
needed to cook
each meal are provided along with
detailed
instructions. Two cooks and two
cleaners are needed
each Sunday through the fall term.
Contact Will:
hanner@ou.edu or Kate: kecarney@hotmail.com
to
volunteer. (We won’t eat without
you!)
INDIVIDUAL SPIRITUAL
DEVELOPMENT/PASTORAL COUNSELING
is available from either the chaplain
or the deacon.
Feeling dazed and confused? Spiritually
adrift? Don’t
know who God is anymore? These are
common issues for
those transitioning to university
life – heck they are
common for all of us. No need to
struggle alone.
Contact Michael or Kay by calling
the office or
respond to this ENews. We’d love
to be a part of your
spiritual growth!
