his education.
Milton is a 9th grader at Bishop
McAllister College

Drop a few
coins into the Milton Fund when
you come by
Canterbury. All it takes is $300
per year to support
him in his education.
STEWARDSHIP
St. Anselm doesn't have what you
would call a regular
stewardship campaign, but the ministry
does require
your support - at least to do the
kind of work we've
been doing at the level we've been
doing it. Michael
asks you to please read on.(more)
NEW WEB SITE UNDER
CONSTRCUTION. If you've ever
visited St. Anselm's web site, you

Carrol, Phd candidate in Education,
that's going to
change soon.(more)

FOR MINISTRY
WORSHIP SCHEDULE

COVERAGE/////////////////
COMMUNITY LIFE
STEWARDSHIP BEGINS
NOW - EVEN WHEN YOU'RE A BROKE
STUDENT
St. Anselm doesn't have what you
would call a regular
stewardship campaign, but the ministry
does require
your support - at least to do the
kind of work we've
been doing at the level we've been
doing it. Some of
our support comes directly from
the assessment budget
of the diocese. Other income is
derived from a small
endowment fund. But the vast majority
of our monthly
income comes from friends and supporters
of this
ministry. ST. ANSELM'S IS DIFFERENT
THAN THE OTHER
CANTERBURY MINISTRIES in the diocese,
in that we do
not enjoy an association with nor
do we derive support
from an existing church congregation.
We must provide
for the upkeep of our building,
support our own
liturgical life and, because of
recent growth, manage
kitchen and maintenance budgets.
This affords us great
freedom, but it also means that
the community must
provide for itself. MANY OF YOU
PLEDGE YOUR SUPPORT
ALREADY by dropping a check or some
bills in the
offering plate every week. But if
you haven't
considered a financial commitment
to St. Anselm's, I
ask you to prayerfully consider
it now.even if you are
struggling with your monthly budget.
REGULAR GIVING IS
A SPIRITUAL DISCIPLINE THAT IS RIGHTLY
DEVELOPED WHILE
YOU ARE IN THE UNIVERSITY. Don't
worry. I'm not going
to ask anyone to fill out a pledge
card. But I am
encouraging you to make a regular
practice of
supporting this community of faith
with your financial
resources, no matter how insignificant
you might
perceive them to be. Even a dollar
a week will make a
supreme difference in the life of
St. Anselm's and in
your own faith journey. That's it
- that's our
stewardship drive for 2004. And
thank you for your
friendship, participation and love
for the church's
mission as expressed through St.
Anselm of Canterbury.
Michael.
UNITED THANK OFFERING
SUNDAY will be Sunday, November
9. Remember those blue boxes when
you were a kid - the
ones your parents or grandparents
kept on the dinner
table and spent weeks stuffing with
coins at mealtime?
UTO is still around and still giving
back to the
larger church. UTO began as a part
of the missionary
efforts of the Women's Auxiliary
to the Board of
Mission in 1889. Every coin that
has ever been
collected in those blue boxes has
been given away in
grants. Programs that have received
UTO support
include: After school programs,
disaster relief,
grants to ministry toward higher
education and health
programs. We support the ministry
of the UTO and will
designate the Sunday offering on
November 9 to the
continuation of their ministry.
ST MICHAEL'S TO
HOLD FINE ARTS SHOW. Our friends
at
St. Michael's Episcopal Church in
Norman invite you to
this crafts fair to be held Saturday,
December 6 from
10am to 4pm at the church 1601 W.
Imhoff Road.
Jewlery, wind chimes, stained glass
and other crafts
will be for sale. There will be
a bakery and café for
a light lunch. Do your last minute
Christmas shopping
at St. Michael's.
SERVICE AND MINSTRY
NEW WEB SITE UNDER
CONSTRCUTION. If you've ever
visited St. Anselm's web site, you
would realize that
its content and design have not
been a staff priority.
But thanks to the recent efforts
of our friend Sean
Carroll, Ph.D. candidate in Adult
& Higher Education, that's going
to
change soon. Mark Sessing, President
put out an appeal
for persons interested in helping
us transform our
website. "Sean emailed me immediately
and said he was
no professional, but would love
to help," Sessing
said. Carroll met with the entire
staff yesterday and
discussed the proposed design and
content of the new
site. Carroll has designed several
non-profit sites and
has an eye for web design. Staff
also discussed
changing the way St. Anselm's generates
its electronic
newsletter and manages its membership
records. St. A's
is making solid progress in the
area of technology due
principally to the generosity and
hard work of Quyen
Arana, who initially suggested that
we invite members
of the community to have a hand
in designing a new
website. Thanks go out to both Sean
and Quyen. Give us
some feedback about what kind of
content YOU would
find helpful on our new website.
BINGO - WEDNESDAY,
NOVEMBER 5 St. Anselm's will call
bingo at Whispering Pines on Wednesday,
November 5, at
2pm. Meet at the nursing facility
at 1:45 (corner of
Porter and Robinson) or carpool
with your friends from
Canterbury at 1:30. This is a psychiatric
nursing
facility that treats patients who
rarely have an
opportunity to get out and who rarely
get visitors. It
is an important part of our outreach
program and has
brought joy to the residents and
to our membership as
well. Please join us!
CANT' GO WITH
US BUT WANT TO SUPPORT OUR OUTREACH
TO
WHISPERING PINES?
The large basket near the front
door is which we used
to put our food offerings will be
used to receive a
different kind of offering - BINGO
PRIZES for
Whispering Pines! Whatever is received
in the basket
will be offered at the altar each
week just as were
doing with the food. But instead
of bringing canned or
boxed food, please bring a little
something that can
be used as a prize when St. Anselm's
goes to
Whispering Pines for bingo.
Here are some
ideas for prizes: regular or diet
soda
in 16 oz plastic bottles (Coke,
Dr. Pepper, Mountain
Dew) is always a big hit, and costume
jewelery
(inexpensive) is enjoyed by the
women. Large and Extra
Large clothing such as t-shirts,
socks, caps, hats,
gloves, scarves, bandanas. Regular
and SUGAR FREE
candies, candy bars and stuffed
toys have proven to be
sought after prizes too. The clothing
needn't be new,
just clean and in good shape. One
thing we must
remember though, is that these gifts
will be used in a
psychiatric ward, and items that
might be breakable or
otherwise harmful to the residents
cannot be used.
Pick up a little
something each time you go to
Wal-Mart, Target or the Dollar Store.
It will be an
on-going offering; so, please bring
a prize next
Sunday, and the next, and the next
- just something
small each time. It is such a simple
way to share. - K
LITURGY AND WORSHIP
LITURGY AND WORSHIP
TEAM WILL MET SUNDAY OCTOBER 26.
About a dozen interested folks attended.
And yes, it
does seem like we've been talking
about inclusive
language liturgies for about a year.
We have. The
challenges to implementing an inclusive
language rite
has to do with the serious lack
of musical resources
out there, especially music used
within the Eucharist
(Gloria, Kyrie, Sanctus, Agnus Dei).
After much
discussion and input, the staff
decided yesterday that
in Epiphany (that's in January when
classes resume),
we will implement inclusive language
(at the very
least) at the Liturgy of the Table.
That means we will
be using a new Eucharistic prayer
and hopefully an
inclusive Sanctus and Fraction Anthem.
We will be
looking for feedback from the community
in terms of
theological soundness and the effectiveness
of the new
language.
LAY PREACHERS
SOUGHT. Several times each year,
with
support from clergy, lay members
of the community are
invited to proclaim the gospel during
the Sunday
evening worship. If you've ever
wanted to try your
hand at preaching the gospel, now's
your chance.
Michael or Kay are available to
assist you with
research and writing and to provide
you with reference
materials. Several memorable sermons
have been
preached by lay people over the
past two years. The
point is we all have it within us
to proclaim the
gospel. The diocese even has a program
whereby laity
can become licensed to preach on
a regular basis after
being trained. Contact Michael for
more info.
