MEET IN 66TH CONVENTION.
Delegates from this community joined
other
Episcopalians across the state for
the 66th annual
convention of the Episcopal Church.
Trinity Church,
Tulsa hosted this year's convention.
Emotions were
running high, in part due to the
national controversy
regarding the consecration of Gene
Robinson as bishop
of New Hampshire on Sunday, November

ST. ANSELM TO
CAROL WITH WHISPERING PINES RESIDENTS.
Mark this date: Sunday, December
7 at 2pm members of
this community will travel to Whispering
Pines to join
in the holiday spirit, sing carols
and present gifts
to the patients in the North Ward
(our bingo friends).
Last year, over twenty people from
this community
participated. It is a fun and meaningful
thing - to
share the joy of the season with
our friends at
Whispering Pines. Meet at the nursing
home a little
before 2pm or meet at St. Anselm's
at 1:30 to carpool.
The caroling will take about an
hour.
NEW WEB SITE UNDER
CONSTRCUTION. Thanks to the efforts
of Sean Carroll, Quyen Arana and
Mark Sessing, our new
website is up and running. We still
have some work to
do in terms of visuals and content,
but the new site
is beautifully designed and a great
improvement over
the previous site. You can log on
here:

OKLAHOMA EPISCOPALIANS
MEET IN CONVENTION
(continued).The convention opened
Thursday evening
with Choral Evensong at Trinity
Church. About 350 were
in attendance. Chaplain, Michael
Athey was the
preacher. Entertainment and a "family
style" dinner
was next on the agenda as the delegates
reconvened at
the Adams Mark hotel in downtown
Tulsa. Friday's
business sessions included the election
of various lay
and clergy people to diocesan and
provincial
commissions. Tim Baer of St. Anselm's
was elected as a
diocesan delegate to the 7th Provincial
Synod. Friday
afternoon included special breakout
sessions to
discuss the various resolutions
that would be voted on
the next day. There were also various
panel dialogues
on issues of church life, social
outreach, evangelism
and liturgical music among others.
The resolutions on
the table included:
A resolution calling
for action on the Tar Creek
Environmental disaster. (Passed)
A resolution celebrating
the Anglican tradition and
the things we share in common as
Episcopalians.
(Passed as amended)
A resolution calling
for the church to interpret
scripture in accordance with tradition
and "according
to the mind of Christ". (Failed)
A resolution supporting
this nation's war veterans
while striving for peace. (Passed)
A resolution to
form an exploratory commission to
consolidate ministry toward young
people and provide
additional resources. (Passed)
A resolution calling
for the Presiding Bishop to show
increased sensitivity toward those
in the church who
have been hurt (over the issue of
Gene Robinson's
election as bishop) and to show
congregational
leadership. (Failed)
A resolution asking
the dioceses to make ministry to
higher education a priority for
future generations of
Episcopalians. (Passed)
A resolution to
approve amended Canons and
Constitution. (Passed)
A resolution asking
the 2005 Convention to decide
whether it will develop rites for
the blessing of
same-sex unions. (Withdrawn by the
author)
A resolution to
reduce the amount congregations
pay to
the diocese from 21.5% to 10%. (Failed)
Additionally,
there was a motion to suspend the
rules
on Friday, to allow the submission
of a resolution
which repudiated the actions of
this summer's General
Convention. The motion to suspend
the rules failed by
a wide margin, and thus the resolution
was not on the
table.
In general, the
mood was hopeful and upbeat. All
debates were conducted with mutual
respect and
dignity. Great solidarity was shown
toward Bishop
Moody and appreciation offered for
his leadership and
passion. Even many of those who
disagreed with
Moody's vote to confirm Robinson
were grateful that he
was able to follow his conscience
in the matter. It
also seemed the spirit of the church
to continue to
minister to one another and to strenghten
the dialogue
on issues that have the potential
to divide us.
Representatives
of the American Anglican Council
were
present and had a display booth
set up. The AAC has
been a vocal opponent to the actions
of General
Convention.
BINGO - WEDNESDAY,
NOVEMBER 19 St. Anselm's will call
bingo at Whispering Pines on Wednesday,
November 19,
at 2pm. Meet at the nursing facility
at 1:45 (corner
of Porter and Robinson) or carpool
with your friends
from Canterbury at 1:30. This is
a psychiatric
nursing facility that treats patients
who rarely have
an opportunity to get out and who
rarely get visitors.
It is an important part of our outreach
program and
has brought joy to the residents
and to our membership
as well. Please join us!
THE RULES HAVE
CHANGED REGARDING SOME BINGO PRIZES!!!
The large basket near the front
door is which we used
to put our food offerings will be
used to receive a
different kind of offering - BINGO
PRIZES for
Whispering Pines! Whatever is received
in the basket
will be offered at the altar each
week just as were
doing with the food. But instead
of bringing canned or
boxed food, please bring a little
something that can
be used as a prize when St. Anselm's
goes to
Whispering Pines for bingo.
Here are some
ideas for prizes: Soda and diet
Soda in
addition to any other liquids have
been eliminated as
prizes at the request of the nursing
staff. Increased
liquids in the system tend to dilute
the effectiveness
of many of the medications the patient
receive. So,
costume jewelery (inexpensive) is
enjoyed by the
women. Large and Extra Large clothing
such as
t-shirts, socks, caps, hats, gloves,
scarves,
bandanas. Regular and SUGAR FREE
candies, candy bars
and stuffed toys have proven to
be sought after prizes
too. The clothing needn't be new,
just clean and in
good shape. One thing we must remember
though, is that
these gifts will be used in a psychiatric
ward, and
items that might be breakable or
otherwise harmful to
the residents cannot be used.
Pick up a little
something each time you go to
Wal-Mart, Target or the Dollar Store.
It will be an
on-going offering; so, please bring
a prize next
Sunday, and the next, and the next
- just something
small each time. It is such a simple
way to share. - K
