Lindy Hop

Starting in the 1930's a new addition to social dancing was the swing out. The swing out is a ball change movement that separates the partners allowing a time for improvisation. This was incorporated into the first swing dance which was named Lindy Hop for Charles Lindberg and his flight across the atlantic.

The Basic Step (Lindy Whip)

Man's Figure:

Rock Step, Side (QQS) Back Spot Turn (QQS)

Lady's Figure:

Rock Step, Fwd (QQS) Forward Spot Turn (QQS)

Explanation

The step is completed in a single eight count with six steps rotating 360 degrees. Quick Quick Slow(QQS) Quick Quick Slow(QQS).
QQS 1 [Swing Out] the partners Break away from each other with a one hand hold for the first two Quicks. Break away is also refered to as a Rock Step or Classically as a Swing Out. On the Slow The two partners meet after a rotation of 90 degrees to the right. To get this rotation the man must step side on his left while the lady steps forward with her right swivelling to place her right between the man's legs.
QQS 2 [The Man's Back Spot Turn] the partners are now in closed position and will complete the mans back spot turn. The man takes three backward steps curving in a tight circle, but not so tight that his inside shoulder, the left, stay stationary or worse moves forward. The Lady will take three steps toward her partner making sure to step squarely toward the center of the man's body. The lady should avoid the desire to dance outside the partnership or as I like to say in the man's right armpit.
