Delta Chapter History
The Delta Chapter of Tau Beta Sigma was originally organized as Alpha Mu Eta Honorary Band Sorority in 1942. The Alpha Mu Eta sought to promote University Bands among women. It was organized by thirty charter members who were aided by both the Delta Chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi and A. Frank Martin, a founding father of Kappa Kappa Psi. The two original purposes were:
- to honor outstanding band girls
- to promote leadership, loyalty, and higher means of attainment
Our first sponsors were Mrs. Maureen Wehrend, Mrs. Irene Haug, and Mrs. Lytle Powell. That year, the chapter hosted the band banquet with Kappa Kappa Psi for the first of many occasions.
In 1946, the women of Alpha Mu Eta petitioned to join newly chartered Tau Beta Sigma Honorary Band Sorority. Thirteen women were granted charter status on April 28, 1946. Forgoing their chronological placement as second in the national chapter, the women of Alpha Mu Eta became the Delta Chapter (numbered 4) of Tau Beta Sigma. That was done to insure the Delta Chapters would become the first “twin” Chapter.
Dorothy Allen Nichols of the Delta Chapter became the fourth National President of Tau Beta Sigma during the 1949-1951 Biennium.
The Delta Chapter was named a Top Ten Chapter for the 1975-1977 and the 2003-2005 Biennium’s. The Delta Chapters of Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma published the 2003-2004 New ALTO (District Newspaper). The 2004 Oklahoma Area Workshop and the 2005 Southwest District Convention were hosted at the University of Oklahoma by the Delta Chapters. Due to our accomplishments in the 2003-2005 Biennium, the Delta Chapter of Tau Beta Sigma received the Grace and A. Frank Martin Chapter Leadership Award designed to honor the top chapter in the nation at the National Convention during the summer of 2005.
