Chapter History
Alpha Iota Chapter ~ In 1915, thirteen women formed a local sorority they named Phi Chi. By November, 1916 these women petitioned to Delta Gamma for a charter. The Alpha Iota chapter of Delta Gamma was installed on June 3rd and 4th, 1918, becoming the sixth sorority on the OU campus. Since Alpha Iota’s installation we have continued to serve our university, community, and foundation.
Recent History ~ In 2001, Alpha Iota won our second President’s Trophy (Overall best sorority on campus) making us the first sorority on campus to win the award twice. In 2004, we held our first lectureship in values and ethics with speaker Jeff Probst, host of CBS survivor and one of People magazine’s 50 most beautiful people.
Sadly weeks later, Alpha Iota mourned the loss of Fern Holland, a member of Alpha Iota, well known campus leader, and champion of women’s rights. She was the first civilian killed in Iraq during the war on terrorism. Every year Alpha Iota endows a scholarship in honor and memory of Fern Holland through our foundation. As we continue our efforts to “do good” we now have Fern to serve as our light.
In 2005, Alpha Iota continued to succeed by placing 3rd in the Campus University Sing Show and consistently making and participating in the show again in 2006, 2007, and 2008. In 2006, Anchor Splash, one of the biggest sorority fundraising events on OU’s campus, raised $18,000 for Service for Sight, and we created a new event, Anchor Man.
In 2008, Amanda Holloway and Megan Bebb were elected as Student Body President and Campus Activities Council Chair respectively, the two highest and most prestigious offices held by students on campus. In 2008, at Delta Gamma Fraternity’s National Convention, Alpha Iota won the National Award of Runner-up for Best Collegiate Chapter. Also in 2008, Amanda Holloway, Vice President Programming and Student Body President, won 2008 Homecoming Queen and Big Woman on Campus which recognized the most outstanding senior woman on OU’s campus. In November of 2008, Alpha Iota welcomed Linda Cohn, ESPN Sports Anchor, to speak at our Lectureship Series. In 2009, Alpha Iota also won “best campus activities” at OU’s President Awards and proudly congratulated their new member’s on second in grades.
In April of 2009, Alpha Iota won 2nd place in the Campus Sooner Scandals competition after a semester of hard work.
Alpha Iota always has and always will seek to “do good” and uphold the high standards set forth by our three founders. We look forward to our coming years of excellence.
