The University of Oklahoma Student Association Graduate Student Senate
Graduate students at the University of Oklahoma formed the Graduate Student Association (GSA) in the spring of 1982. The purpose of the GSA was to facilitate graduate student life on campus and to promote activities that would stimulate the social and educational environment of students in graduate programs at the University of Oklahoma.
From the very start, the association promoted programs designed to serve the needs of all graduate students at OU. The most important one was the graduate fellowship program.
In the spring of 1987, the Graduate Student Senate was formed through a referendum to the University of Oklahoma Student Association (UOSA) Constitution, by which graduate students were recognized as part of the student body and were given representation in the student government through the Graduate Student Senate (GSS)
Since then, GSS has remained an active part of the student government and has been involved in several initiatives that include, among others:
- Establishing a daycare center on campus (opened in 1994)
- In 1996, GSS was involved in getting an increase of 5% of the Graduate Assistant Stipend
- In 1997, GSS got health insurance for Graduate Assistants in the funding agendas of the state legislature and OU administration.
The Graduate Student Senate is committed to stimulate the endeavors of all the graduate students and to improve their experience in any of the great programs offered through the Graduate College at the University of Oklahoma.
