Fun Facts

One hundred and five (105) freshmen are members of the 2006-2007 President’s Leadership Class, a program designed to cultivate students’ leadership abilities. They were chosen from almost 3000 applicants.
The leadership class was established in 1961 by the late David A. Burr, former Vice President of University Affairs in response to then University President George Lynn Cross’ concern that many of Oklahoma’s outstanding young men and women were leaving the state to attend college and then not returning to Oklahoma to live and work.
These students, recognized as leaders in their high schools, are provided opportunities to apply their leadership skills through diverse activities across the campus and to meet many university, state, and national leaders.
PLC members meet some of the University’s finest faculty members and explore many of OU’s treasures such as the History of Science Collection, the Sam Noble Museum of Natural History, the Political Commercial Archives, the Fred Jones, Jr. Museum of Art and the National Weather Center. They also have the opportunity meet dignitaries that visit our campus. In the past, students have attended dinner with Doris Kearns Goodwin, dinner with President Gorbachev, dinner with the Crown Prince of Jordan and lunch with Elizabeth Dole.
Class members attend weekly meetings and participate in special retreats and events with university officials and special guests. They also have the opportunity to contribute to the university and Norman communities through volunteer activities.
Additionally, the PLC members assist Recruitment Services with their outreach efforts.
Recently, the University named its list of the 12 Outstanding Freshmen and 6 of them were members of last year’s President’s Leadership Class (Munim Deen, Koby Harrington, Allison Hay, Amanda Holloway, McKenna Lossman, and Sarah Shutts).
2005-2006 Highlights: PLC retreat, dinner at the homes of the Faculty in Residence, dinner with President and Mrs. Boren, Dr. George Henderson, trip to the Oklahoma City Bombing Memorial, Dr. Rufus Fears, visit to the Switzer Center with Coach Bob Stoops, dinner at the Governor’s Mansion, ballroom dancing lessons, PLC talent show, and many, many more!
