Attending college is always an
expensive investment -- but even more so in your junior and senior years. Finding
sources of funding can be time consuming and frustrating. To make your search a
little easier, we are including some links to important scholarship information sites on
the web. Your first step, however, should be a visit to the OU Office of Financial
Aid. They will provide you with the forms necessary to process and receive aid
through the university. Each year the OU Phi Theta
Kappa Alumni Association offers several tuition waivers to incoming juniors.
Application forms are available through the OU Office of Financial Aid. Involvement
in your local chapter, and continued involvement at OU, are important considerations in
the selection process. Get involved; stay involved! |

TIPS

| WHAT DO THE MARINES, THE GIRL SCOUTS, MEMBERS OF
THE GARMENT WORKERS UNION, AND DEPENDENTS OF FIRE FIGHTERS HAVE IN COMMON?
ANSWER: All of these are potential qualifications for various
scholarships available on the web. Before filling out your fastWEB profile, make a list of all your (and your
parents' or guardians') previous and current affiliations.

fastWEB - Allows visitors to build a
personal profile and then feeds information to their private online mailbox. No
charge for the service. Covers wide range of scholarships, loans, and grants.
Has links to all major web scholarship sites. |
 |
OU Financial Aid - They have
additional links that will be valuable. In addition, the OU application deadlines
are listed. |
 |
Visit any web sites sponsored by your own, or your parents'/guardians'
employers. Many of these sites will list their own scholarship information and may
not post them to a search site such as fastWEB. |

Although PTK students typically perform at a high scholastic level, a
really bad semester can happen to even the best of students. Do not assume that you
will be unable to qualify for financial assistance because of a low gpa. Although
many scholarships and loans are fully or partially based on performance, many others are
needs-based. Some scholarships are specifically established to assist those students
who have "average" performance records. |

SCAM ALERT
If money is available, then thieves will not be
far behind! An application that requires you to send in money to be considered
should be dropped in the nearest shredder. No legitimate scholarship organization
requires that potential recipients send money to be considered for an award.
Loans are funding that MUST be repaid.
Before taking out a private loan, check with your financial aid office to see if you
qualify for low interest guaranteed loans. Read loan applications carefully and be
sure you understand both the rate of interest that will be added to the loan, and the
compounding period that will be applied.
