Campaign Finance in Supreme Court
(altavista.net)

Washington, DC – September 8th: The Supreme Court held a special, four-hour session to hear arguments over campaign finance reform centering around arguments on free speech vs. the government’s right to regulate. Representing Senate Republican whip Mitch McConnell of Kentucky an other challenges to the McCain-Feingold Campaign Finance law is Attorney Ken Starr, the former independent counsel whose investigation ultimately led to President Clinton's impeachment. Ken Starr stated that the law violates the First Amendment right of free speech in that the use of money is an expression of that freedom. After its passage in 2002, 84 plaintiffs filed a variety of lawsuits, led by McConnell and a bipartisan coalition of groups including the AFL-CIO, the National Rifle Association, the American Civil Liberties Union, the Republican National Committee and the California Democratic Party.
