Summer + Friends = Good Times

By Nate Kerswill and Katie Wilks

The UOAS hosted it's end of the year party on May 9 and from all accounts it sounds like a good time was had by all. Beer and Vodka were available at the party and many of the people in attendance choose to partake of these liquid delights. Due to the attendance of three non-members the club was able to muster up an extra fifteen dollars to supplement the years funds. Not an exorbitant amount by any stretch, but a welcome addition none the less. The night started out with a delightful drinking game where everyone including Mark and Fielding, made up a rule and started picking on Mark and Fielding. Another well-received party game was Beer Pong. For those who are unfamiliar with the game the objective is to make your opponent(s) drink more beer than you by tossing a ping-pong ball into a glass of beer set up on their side of the table. For the most part Caleb and his crew dominated the beer pong until the unstoppable, or was it unstable, force of Fielding and Matt ended the streak. Autumn brought her Sega Saturn and the game Bomberman with her which was also a big hit and included such memorable party lines from sloshed members such as: "Brandon, (this is what I was being called by this time) are you edible?" and "Nathan, pronounced Nafen, is the Goddess of Purple Dinosaurs!" Remember despite all medical evidence to date, if you can stand, then you're not drunk. For the record, I am definitely NOT the Goddess of Purple Dinosaurs and I hate Barney. By the end of the night everyone was feeling pretty good and so in order to end the night on a high note Fielding and Mark insisted on downing a shot of Crazy Ivan's Potato Vodka and well, let's just say that if you are going to drink bad Vodka you shouldn't have high expectation about how you will feel afterwards. Yes the end of the year bash appears to have been a resounding success. If you were able to make it then we hope you enjoyed yourself but if not then we hope to see you next time. Until then avoid cheap Vodka ad if anyone asks tell them you aren't edible, the Goddess of Purple Dinosaurs told you so! For pictures and video of the party visit: www.softassteel.com/ack/finals.

4Kids Entertainment has announced that a world of spirits and ghosts is about to descend on FOX BOX this fall with the debut of "Shaman King", the anime television series based on Hiroyuki Takei's multi-million selling graphic novels thus effectively announcing that they had licensed at lease part of the TV series. There is no mention of whether or not they have licensed the rest of the 64 episodes or if the 26 episodes to be broadcast are in fact the first 26 episodes. 4Kids Entertainment has an exclusive license with Fox to provide all the programming for FOX BOX. 4Kids Entertainment will produce 26 episodes for U.S. broadcast on FOX BOX beginning September 2003.

Anime Makes Economic Sense to Me!

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) has now placed the so-called "contents industry", including the anime and games industry as part of the core of the Japanese export industry in line with the manufacturing industry. They have now set a special research society in order to research plans in expanding he market outside of Japan. The members of he research society include Jirou Ushio, the ex-Chairman of The Board of the Japan Association of Corporate Executives, now the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Ushio Inc. and the manga artist Kenshi Hirokane who is known for his "Division Chief Kosaku Shima" series. The research society plans to help create a bridge between the Japanese anime/game companies that hope to expand to the international market and the local enterprises in order to increase the scale of the Japanese contents industry twofold by the year 2010. They are also planning to discuss a system by which they can remunerate those who help out in informing about pirate copies. The news creates deep emotions with those involved in the anime industry as the Japanese government has finally started to recognize the potentiality of the Japanese anime/game industry. Hopefully, this will not end as a mere trend.

A-Kon Sold Out Two Hotels

The annual trip to A-Kon has come and gone. Because of a last minute opportunity the club was able to get three rooms instead of two at a cost of roughly $186. The additional room made it so that there were only six peoples to a room instead of the originally planned 9, definitely an advantage and well worth the additional cost. Some of the features of this year's A-Kon included a scavenger hunt that Anthony dominated in, a variety of panels pertaining to the industry and several different "game shows" as well as two live concerts by Camino and Duel Jewel on Friday night. According to A-Kon's official website the convention sold out both the Hyatt DFW (a very fitting name for a hotel hosting an anime convention) and Ramada and when the con rolled around was working on selling out the Harvey Hotel as well. All of the club's rooms were located at the Hyatt DFW where the con was held.
