There are certain electronic devices that continue to use power even though they are not turned on, lovingly called "Phantoms". To help save electricity in your home or office remember to unplug your phone, laptop, camera, Ipod, and/or power tool charger.

RecycleMania

RecycleMania is a friendly competition and benchmarking tool for college and university recycling programs. Over a 10-week period, schools report recycling and trash data, which are then ranked according to who collects the largest amount of recyclables per capita, the largest amount of total recyclables, the least amount of trash per capita, or have the highest recycling rate. With each week’s reports and rankings, participating schools watch how their results fluctuate against other schools and use this to rally their campus communities to reduce and recycle more. For more information about RecycleMania visit the official website here. The American College and University Presidents' Climate Commitment (ACUPCC), of which, the Norman Campus is a charter signatory, has made RecycleMania an integral component of its action plan.  January 2010 will be the beginning of our second year to participate in the national recycling competition.

In 2009, OU's first year to participate, the community recycled more than 320,000 pounds of paper, plastic and aluminum, which exceeds our benchmarking goal by 50%. Our per capita total was 14.25 pounds.  Encouraged by last year’s success, we hope to exceed last year’s total and recycle 18 pounds per person.

To give students an opportunity to creatively express their passion for recycling, we are having a campus-wide video competition.  Students vote on their favorite video, and the participants who created the video with the most votes will win a $1500 scholarship.

Video details coming soon... Below is an inspirational video about recycling.
