Pediatric Emergency Medicine

Pediatric EM is one of the core areas of learning and expertise within the specialty of EM. In addition to the high-volume pediatric clinical exposure OUDEM residents receive in our standard EDs, our EM specialists-in-training rotate at OU Children's Hospital ED in Oklahoma City (housing and other support are provided). OUDEM Pediatric EM faculty assist in teaching courses such as PALS and NALS, and faculty from Pediatric EM and Medical Simulation continue to collaborate to optimize training for evaluation and care of acutely ill or injured children.

Every week at OUDEM’s didactics conference, topics are discussed that include pediatric presentations. Each month, the OUDEM Journal Club discusses selected publications from the EM and broader medical literature. Every Journal Club involves at least one paper with pediatric focus. The background of Pediatric EM faculty – with board certification in both Pediatrics and EM – allows for assistance in discussing the latest evidence dealing with acute presentations of children.

The major recent change to the Pediatric EM program has been the establishment of a Pediatric EM Fellowship by OU's Department of Pediatrics. This fellowship, based at Oklahoma City's OU Children's Hospital, is formally affiliated with OUDEM as its EM residency partner. We are quite fortunate to have Pediatric EM fellows rotate with us in our Tulsa EDs. Our EM residents execute their Pediatric EM rotation at OU Children's Hospital, where they benefit from the experience and expertise available from that center's specialists in evaluation and management of acutely ill and injured children.
