Emergency Medicine Residency Program
The OU Department of Emergency Medicine is home to Oklahoma's only allopathic residency training program in EM. Our first class of residents, who began their EM training year in 2008, quickly integrated into the fabric of healthcare in our region. The EM residents' work ethic, intellect, interpersonal skills, and educational interests and abilities have been a major part of the Department's seamless and collegial acceptance into OU's medical and allied health community.
The OU EM residency comprises 18 residents and approximately two dozen faculty. Residents are based at Hillcrest Medical Center, but also perform off-service rotations at St. John Medical Center and at St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa. Optional rotations include Pediatric EM at the OUHSC Children’s Hospital in Oklahoma City, and Shock/Trauma at MIEMSS in Baltimore.
The size of Tulsa and the ease of commuting mean that all three Tulsa hospitals are convenient to the OU medical campus, and inclusion of three hospitals affords the residents chances to rotate on specialized services emphasized at a particular institution (e.g., Burn Center, Trauma Center).
OUDEM’s resources are concentrated on the preparation of our EM specialists-in-training for careers in the ED. The emphasis on residents as a focal point of OUDEM activities is found within each Section’s activities. In every endeavor of OUDEM the faculty aim to involve the residents.
