OU-Tulsa Student Receives Inaugural CAS Dean's Award for Community Impact

In May 2017, Emeka Nnaka received the Dean’s Award for Community Impact for the OU College of Arts & Sciences. This was the inaugural year for the faculty nominated award and was meant to honor a College of Arts & Sciences student whose exemplary dedication to community service has made a positive impact on the local, national, or international community. The faculty member who nominated Emeka said, “One of the primary goals of the MHR program is to equip students with research, knowledge, and skills to transform unfavorable conditions into flourishing ones for individuals, families, communities, and organizations. Emeka is engaged in this life-changing effort every day.”

When asked about the award, Emeka said, “This award means everything to me. It is almost like a mile marker that I am on the right direction. Whatever it is I am doing in this city, I am on the right track. I want to make Tulsa as best as it can be and that starts with community.”

Emeka is most proud of his work in the non-profit sector, especially with the United Way. “The building blocks of a community are hospitals, business, schools, and things like that, the mortar that holds it all together and keeps people from falling through the cracks are non-profit agencies. Communities hold states together, and states hold America together. You can’t think global without thinking local.”

Emeka is currently earning his Masters of Human Relations at OU-Tulsa. “This degree has helped me acknowledge that while we are all different, we are all still human. As I continue to learn ways to be a force for good in my community, it also opens up doors to go to different levels,” said Emeka, “Human Relations is a thing I live for and to be a master of it is what I want to do.”

Congratulations to Emeka for receiving this prestigious award.
