Do I Need to Take the Reading Assessment?
Students who have NOT met one of the following criteria will be required to complete their Reading Assessment prior to their New Sooner Orientation day:
- Reading ACT score is 19 or higher,
- Evidence Based Reading and Writing SAT score is 510 or higher,
- OR have already successfully completed a heavy reading college-level course, such as history or government.
What to Expect
OU’s Reading Assessment is given through the College Board’s Accuplacer program. Accuplacer uses web-based assessments designed to evaluate student skills in reading and measure a student's ability to understand what he/she reads, to identify main ideas and make inferences.
The reading assessment is 20 questions and is untimed, although the average time spent on an attempt is one hour.
ProctorU is a live online proctoring service that allows you to take your exam from the comfort of your home. ProctorU is available 24/7 and free of charge for students taking the math placement. Before you can complete the reading placement assessment, you must create a ProctorU account and schedule your virtual assessment session. Creating a ProctorU account is simple. You can do so by visiting go.proctoru.com. Please be sure to utilize your University of Oklahoma email address for your account.
You will need:
· A high-speed internet connection
· A webcam (internal or external)
· A Windows or Apple Operating System
· A government issued photo ID
ProctorU recommends that you visit https://go.proctoru.com/students/system-metrics/new prior to your proctoring session to test your equipment. You may use the chat box towards the bottom right to connect with a live representative for questions or for assistance troubleshooting any issues. Please make sure that you are using the current version of your browser and have downloaded the ProctorU extension available at bit.ly/proctoruchrome or proctoru.com/firefox.
Additionally, please visit and review the test-taker resource center here. You should expect the startup process with the proctor to take about 10-15 minutes. However, this time will not affect your exam time. Please feel free to direct any questions to the student support team via the live chat within your account.
Empowering student success through accurate placement into OU courses is the primary focus of all assessments. Therefore all work should result from the student’s own understanding and effort. (See OU’s Student Guide for Academic Integrity for additional information.)
