Course Description: An introduction to the flora of Oklahoma with emphasis on the use of taxonomic keys, terminology of vascular plants and the techniques of collecting and preserving plant specimens.
Topics Covered: Topics will include terminology of vascular plants, use of taxonomic keys and manuals, techniques of collecting and preserving plant specimens, major vascular plant families, and common herbaceous and woody taxa of Oklahoma.
Laboratory: Lecture and laboratory will be combined and will involve review of topics listed above. Local field trips will be made to study and collect selected taxa and to examine geological and ecologically distinctive regions of the state.
Examinations: One mid-session examination and one final examination will be given, each consisting of short answer and essay questions. Daily quizzes covering lecture topics and the recognition of species, genera and families will be given.
Grading Policy: The course will be based on a percentage of the total points possible. In general, A= 90-100%; B= 80-89%; C= 70-79%; D= 60-69%.
Projects Required: Undergraduate students will be required to make a plant collection of 12 species and graduate students will collect 15 species. Information will be extracted from a variety of reference works provided by the instructor. All collections will be put in the UOBS herbarium. All students will be required to complete 15 plant analysis sheets (none of these 15 plants are to be part of the plant collection).

Tyrl, R.J., Bidwell, T.G., and Masters, R.E. (2002). Field Guide to Oklahoma Plants Commonly Encountered Prairie, Shrubland, and Forest Species. Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, OK. $35.00 plus tax.
Textbooks will be sold prior to our first class meeting. Dissecting equipment will be supplied by the instructors.
