ESSAY CONTEST (First Prize - $250)
"Service, Sacrifice, and the Korean War"

The Norman Public Schools and the OU Institute for US-China Issues are sponsoring an essay contest for all students enrolled at Norman North or Norman High School.

Student essays should respond to the following prompt: “The 60th anniversary of the beginning of the Korean War is a time for Americans to reflect on the service and sacrifice of those men and women involved in that conflict.” For inspiriation, you may wish to read a short essay about Private First Class Charlie Johnson who was Killed in Action, or talk to a local veteran.

Here are the specifications required for an essay to be considered: typed, doubled spaced, 1” margins, one thousand words maximum, 12 point font, must include the student’s name and social studies teacher at the top of the front page. Judging will be based primarily on content and quality of expression.

To enter, submit your essay by email to jamesm@norman.k12.ok.us by October 25. Late entries will not be considered.

A $250 cash prize and an award certificate for the winning essay will be presented at a morning assembly honoring Korean War veterans on November 1. For more information contact Jim Murphree, Social Studies Coordinator at (405) 623-5059 or at the email address shown above.
