Accademia Filarmonica to Perform One of Mozart’s Finest Pieces

posted on October 15, 2009.

“Although Mozart died before he could complete the work, Mozart's ‘Requiem’ is one of his greatest masterpieces,” says Eugene Enrico, Reaugh professor of Musicology with the OU School of Music and conductor for Accademia Filarmonica.

The University of Oklahoma School of Music presents Accademia Filarmonica a part of the Sutton Concert Series at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 25, in the Sharp Concert Hall. The program opens with Mozart's “Sinfonia Concertante”, featuring OU professors Gregory Lee, solo violin and Mark Neumann, solo viola. Neumann has just joined the OU faculty as Professor of Viola. Concertmaster will be violinist Rebecca Ansel, who is visiting professor of Violin.

“The Requiem was commissioned in secret by Count von Wallsegg in memory of his recently departed wife. Count Wallsegg planned to claim it as his own composition. But Mozart died before he could finish. Mozart's wife Constanze, who needed the commission money, hired Mozart's assistant Franz Xavier Süssmayer to complete the work,” says Enrico.

The finale of the concert, Mozart’s “Requiem,” conducted by Richard Zielinski, will feature the University Chorale, University Singers and the Singing Sooners. Zielinski joined the OU School of Music faculty as director of Choral Activities. Soloists will include OU professor Donna Cox, soprano; Southern Nazarene University professor Rebekah Ambrosini, alto; OU professor Bradley Williams, tenor, and guest artist Todd Donovan, bass.
