World Literature Today is pleased to accept applications for Neustadt Student Fellowships and Puterbaugh Student Fellowships. These fellowships pay for tuition and books in the Neustadt or Puterbaugh classes WLT sponsors. Student Fellows also have designated meetings with visiting writers and scholars. Specific deadline dates are posted with other information for these programs (Neustadt; Puterbaugh), but the applications are generally accepted during the semester prior to the semester of the class and (usually) during the first week or two of the semester in which the class is offered.

Course Description: The course is designed to acquaint the student with the plays of Irish playwright Marina Carr in the context of Contemporary Irish Drama. It will include a brief examination of the history of Irish theatre and playwriting, and an exploration of the roles of women in Irish culture and drama. Additionally, students will analyze Ms. Carr’s plays in terms of recurrent or contrasting themes, structures and motifs.

Evaluation Criteria:

1. Written or oral evidence of completion of all assigned readings.
2. Attendance at all Puterbaugh Festival activities, March 7-10, 2012, including panels, lectures and the production of By the Bog of Cats, March 10, 2012, Old Science Hall. Ms. Carr will be in attendance.
3. Written essays and one final 10-page paper. Graduate student will have an additional mid-term assignment of a 7-page paper.
4. Attendance at all class meetings.

Tuesday, April 17. Attendance at all Puterbaugh Festival events.
