Where is the Writing Center?

The ConocoPhillips Writing Center is located in Lower Level 2 of the Bizzell Library. From the main entrance, follow the stairs down as far as they go, then turn right and you’re there! We are easily accessible; you can take the elevator from the main floor to our level. Back to top.

What are the Writing Center’s hours?

We are open from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM Monday through Wednesday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM on Thursday, and 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM on Friday (walk-ins only). Back to top.

What is a session like?

First you will log in with us. Then, typically the consultant will ask you about your assignment and get you thinking and talking about what you want to do to improve the writing. For example, you might just want to brainstorm ideas, or you might want to get some direct guidance on the punctuation. You will likely have global (big picture things like organization of your argument) and local (proofreading and editing) concerns. Let us know what you want to work on. Sessions run about 30 minutes—longer for big projects and graduate or international students. Back to top.

What do I need to bring in? My paper? My assignment sheet? A pencil? What?

Unless you just want to shoot the breeze and explore ideas (which is fine with us), bringing the paper itself is more or less required. Bringing the assignment sheet is also highly recommended so that we can help you meet your instructor’s requirements. We have plenty of pencils. Back to top.

How do I schedule an appointment?

There are several options. First, you can sign up for an appointment online at http://ou.edu/writingcenter. Register and follow the links to make your appointment. Second, you can call the writing center for an appointment at 325-2936. Finally, you are always welcome to make appointments in person. Back to top.

Do I need to schedule an appointment? Can’t I just drop in?

Walk-ins are welcome. In fact, we keep one or two consultants on hand especially for walk-ins. During busy times in the semester (especially mid-term and dead week) you may want to consider making an appointment. Back to top.

Do I have to meet with a consultant if I visit the writing center? Can’t I just hang out? Or consult some of the writing center’s reference books?

You’re welcome in the writing center no matter what your academic ambition may be. We may draw the line if you begin conducting chemistry experiments on us. Back to top.

What happens if I’m late for an appointment?

A consultant will still see you, but you may have to wait while we accommodate other students. Back to top.

Does the Writing Center accommodate group projects? How?

Yes, we have larger tables available. Ideally, a group session will be most productive if all members of the group are present. Friday afternoons can be reserved for these meetings too. Back to top.

What if my paper only exists electronically? Can I bring my laptop? Can I access it from one of the computers at the writing center?

Yes to all of the above. We have strategies for offering feedback on your writing--no matter what form it takes. You might have a few notes scribbled down, or a rough draft on your laptop, or a hard copy that you want to read with us for final proofreading and editing. Back to top.

What aspects of writing will my consultant go over? Grammar? Content?

Although we are capable of giving your paper a very general assessment that touches on many aspects of composition (ideally informed by the assignment criteria determined by your class) we are also happy to focus on any particular aspect of your writing that you believe needs special attention. Is the Writing Center only for papers from my English class?

Not at all. In fact, most of the students we meet with bring papers from a course in their major, or from a general education elective; you can bring in any writing from any course, including personal and creative writing. Back to top.

The writing center looks different this year. What happened to the cubicles? Can I get some privacy?

Our policy is one of openness, but we do have a cubicle set aside for private sessions if you prefer. Back to top.
