“Seek out the opportunities and internships that may seem out of reach. If they are available, it only means someone else has done it before, and so can you! Likewise, if I could do it, so can you! Continue to strive to achieve your goals and never give up."

First and foremost, congratulations on your acceptance into the great University of Oklahoma (OU)! It is truly a wonderful place.

My name is Ana Garcia, and I graduated from OU in 2011 with my bachelor’s degree and in 2015 from my graduate studies. I am a proud Sooner for many reasons. As a first-generation college student, attending a four-year university was overwhelming and intimidating. Suddenly, the cream of the crop of their respective graduating classes surrounded me. To say I experienced culture shock is an understatement.

Yet, this great university understands the needs of its students. In their selection process they have hand-selected you for your drive and ability to succeed in challenging situations. OU provides its students with unsurpassed student resources, college counseling, health counseling, and fitness availability. Without these resources, perhaps my story would have been different.

Whether you’re first generation or come from a long family history of proud Sooner alum, our stories can be very similar. Seek out the student resources available, join the student clubs, and become involved! This is the true key to college success. Obtaining a degree is key, but the relationships you allow yourself to build in the next four years will last forever. Seek out the opportunities and internships that may seem out of reach. If they are available, it only means someone else has done it before, and so can you! Likewise, if I could do it, so can you! Continue to strive to achieve your goals and never give up. I wish you the very best and may your college experience be as grand as mine!
