“During my time at OU, I found my own voice, my own path, and created my very own Sooner story. My hope for you is that you will do the same. Take advantage of all of the different opportunities at OU, but most importantly, take advantage of the opportunities to make lifelong friends. Being a Sooner is special because not only do you gain a degree, you gain a family."

My name is Brooke Hamilton, and it was not too long ago that I was in your shoes, trying to make a decision about where my “home” would be for the next four years. I was born and raised in Norman, Oklahoma, and I grew up being able to hear OU fans cheering on the Sooner football team at the Gaylord Family - Oklahoma Memorial Stadium from my own backyard. Being a Sooner fan was tradition in my family, with my great-grandparents, grandparents, and parents all having attended the University of Oklahoma, and I truly was “Sooner born and bred.” When determining where I wanted to go to college, I strongly considered OU but was hesitant because it was in the same town where I grew up. However, going to OU was one of the best decisions I have ever made.

Even though I had grown up in Norman, I realized that there was a whole other world hidden from me before, and I experienced something totally brand new. There were so many new people and so many opportunities to experience things I did not know were possible. While I was at OU, I had the opportunity to be a part of organizations such as the President’s Leadership Class, Crimson Club, Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, the 2010-2011 OU Pom Squad, OU Dance Marathon, Student Government Association, Camp Crimson, and so much more. I also had the opportunity to learn from some of the best professors in the OU History Department, as well as through the nonprofit studies program. My experiences at OU and the opportunities to serve others sparked my interest in law, and I decided to apply for and attend law school at the University of Oklahoma College of Law and now serve as Counsel at MACH Resources.

The most valuable gift I took away from my time at OU was the friendships. The people I met while I was a college student at OU forever changed my life. My friends allowed me the freedom to grow into the person I was meant to be, while also challenging me to see the world around me from a new perspective. College is a unique season in life, in that you will meet more people from different walks of life at once than at any other time in your life, and it is important that you take the chance to get to know those who cross your path. Some of my favorite memories from my undergraduate years were walking down the South Oval and waving at familiar faces as we passed each other going to class.

During my time at OU, I found my own voice and my own path and created my very own Sooner story. My hope for you is that you will do the same. Take advantage of all of the different opportunities at OU, but most importantly, take advantage of the opportunities to make lifelong friends. Being a Sooner is special because not only do you gain a degree, you gain a family.
