Provost's Advisory Committee on Academic Advising

Statement of Purpose and Operation

The Mission of Academic Advising at the University of Oklahoma is to educate and empower students as they design, develop, and implement individual academic plans leading to intellectual, personal, and professional growth for success as citizens of the global community.

Definition of Academic Advising

Advising student

Academic advising is an interactive process in which the adviser helps the student set and achieve academic goals, acquire relevant information and services, and make responsible decisions consistent with interests, goals, abilities, and degree requirements. Decisions concerning careers and/or graduate study may be part of the advising process. Advising should be personalized to consider the special needs of each student, which may include appropriate referral services.

Committee Goals

  • to provide a rationale for the advising process and acknowledge and support the personal dimension of the advising relationship
  • to serve as a clearing house for information concerning potential changes in prerequisites, general program and course requirements, certification procedures and criteria, course offerings, courses closed to further enrollment, enrollment dates and procedures, etc.
  • to act as liaison and information conduits for the involved units and other units
  • to develop, organize and promote professional development and training activities for academic advisers on the Norman and Oklahoma City campuses
  • to strengthen the working relationships between professional and faculty academic advisers
