OU Majors and Minors

Identifying your major is not only one of the most important decisions you will make, but it is also one of the hardest. Many students have no idea what they want to do; others know what they want, but there is no identifiable major for that interest area.

For guidance in this big decision, we identified a few resources. See Exploring Majors for details about your options or Reading Check Sheets for assistance in determining academic major criteria. Information for adding a minor is also included.

The Semester-By-Semester Plans will help you plan your schedule and stay on track to graduate.

Once you have decided on a major, you may declare or change your major as outlined below.

How To Declare or Change a Major or Minor

University College students must visit with an academic counselor in that college before changing majors.

If you are a student who is already in a degree-granting college, you should follow the steps below to change your major or add another major or minor.

Step 1

Review the admission requirements of the college of your new major or minor. See College Admission Requirements for more information.

Step 2

If you meet the initial admission requirements, go to the advising office in the college of the major or minor that you want to change to or add.

Step 3

Tell the receptionist that you want to change your major (or add a minor) to “_____” in that college. (Some colleges require that you meet with an academic counselor before changing your major, and some colleges will accept you if you meet the general admission requirements.)

Step 4

When the college accepts you, they will ask you to fill out paperwork, providing them with the necessary information to make the change.

Step 5

Students often ask, “What about getting my records transferred to my new college?” Each college has a different process, and you will need to ask your new college how to get your records transferred.
