The Department provides the following scholarships and awards to outstanding undergraduate and graduate majors. The faculty selects scholarship and award winners each spring semester after reviewing applications from students for these scholarships and awards.

The John Michael Caldwell Memorial Teaching Award recognizes outstanding teaching by teaching assistants. Awards are made in the spring semester in the amount of $500.00 per award recipient.
The James C. Davis Geography Early Scholar Award is given to an undergraduate student who has exhibited acedemic talent during his or her freshman, sophomore or junior year. Preference is given to residents of Oklahoma and students exhibiting financial need. The award is made in the spring semester in the amount of $500.00.
The Gress Family Geography Scholarship is made possible by a generous donation by Gary and Wanda Gress of Norman. The awardee is a student who is an active contributor to the department via academic endeavors, service(s), projects, research or other meaningful departmental activities. The award is made in the spring semester in the amount of $500.00.
The Richard L. Nostrand Scholarship recognizes outstanding graduate student research in cultural and historical geography. The award is made in the spring semester in the amount of $500.00.
May be awarded to a full-time, regularly enrolled undergraduate or graduate student in the Department of Geography and Environmental Sustainability. Eligibility of candidates is based on progress toward earning a degree, and a GPA of 3.75 grade point average or higher on a 4.0 scale. Applications will be reviewed based on academic performance, an essay written by the candidate and letters of recommendation by persons familiar with the candidates' academic work. Awards are made in the spring semester.
The Ralph and Margaret Olson Scholarships are awarded to both undergraduate and graduate students. Undergraduate awardees must be junior or senior geography majors with one or more semesters remaining. Graduate winners must have completed at least one academic year of graduate work at OU with one or more semesters remaining. Candidates are identified on the basis of academic achievement, intellectual ability, financial need, and literary and speaking skills. Awards are made in the spring semester in the amount of $500.00.
The Pugh Pioneer Family Scholarship is awarded to an undergraduate geography major with an outstanding academic record. Preference is given to residents of Oklahoma. The award is made in the spring semester in the amount of $500.00.
The South Central Climate Adaptation Science Center Scholarship is awarded to outstanding undergraduate students in any major within the Department of Geography and Environmental Sustainability.
Applicants must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher. Preference will be given to students demonstrating a financial need. The award is $1,000 and will be announced in the spring semester.
The Charles Standley Memorial Award is presented to recognize an outstanding publication by a graduate student. The award is made in the spring semester in the amount of $500.00.
The Bheru and Lila Sukhwal Scholarship is awarded to a graduate student who produces outstanding work in the area of political geography. The award is made in the spring semester in the amount of $500.00.
The Oklahoma Chapter of the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) scholarship is awared to an undergraduate student in the Department of Geography and Environmental Sustainability. The award is made in the spring semester in the amount of $500.00.
The Stephen M. Sutherland Fund supports travel expenses and other research by students in the Department of Geography and Environmental Sustainability. Funds are available to all majors within the department. Inquiries should be directed to Dr. Scott Greene, Chair (jgreene@ou.edu).
The Chair's Award for Outstanding Capstone Project is awarded near the end of the spring semester to the student or team with the capstone project judged outstanding by the department's faculty. The award amount is $500.00.
