Hi, my name is Jarrod Roach, and I am an analytical chemistry student in Dr. McCall’s lab. I have always been fascinated by the chemical processes that allow humans to function on a daily basis. In particular, I enjoyed understanding how certain illnesses and diseases cause dysregulation to the natural chemical processes within our bodies. My research in the McCall lab focuses on investigating how small molecules known as metabolites are affected by diseases such as Chagas Disease and COVID-19. We utilize a technique that allows us to investigate localized effects of disease in specific locations of the body so that we can have a better understanding of how parasites and viruses localize in specific portions of the body. Ultimately, we aim to use this method to discover early detection methods and improved treatment methods for diseases. After graduation, I plan to utilize the skills I have gained from my research to manufacture novel therapeutical drugs in the pharmaceutical industry.
