Fall 2024 Courses for Environmental Studies

Core Courses

Environmental Studies majors take a sequence of core courses: ENST 2813 (Cornerstone), ENST 3893 (Research), ENST 4883 (Seminar), and ENST 4893 (Capstone). They also take 3 hours of ENST 3891 (Learning Community)—concurrently with ENST 2813 and ENST 3893, and one other semester.

Environmental Studies minors take ENST 2813 (Cornerstone), ENST 3893 (Research), and one hour of ENST 3891 (Learning Community) concurrently with ENST 2813.

This table shows Core courses offered in Fall 2024.

NameCRNTimeDescription
ENST 2813/001: Environmental Studies Cornerstone44341TR, 1:30 - 2:45This course introduces students to the Environmental Studies program. It offers students an overview of environmental teaching and research at OU, and emphasizes the importance of integrating disciplinary perspectives on environmental topics.
ENST 3891/001: Environmental Studies Learning Community42203R, 4:30-5:45The Learning Community course gives Environmental Studies majors the opportunity to enrich their classroom experience, through a variety of activities including structured interactions with other students; presentations on academic and policy topics; workshops on career planning; and environmentally related service projects.
ENST 4883/900: Environmental Studies Seminar48938F, 2:00 - 4:40

What’s needed to solve the really hard environmental problems? One of the most complex environmental issues we face has to do with conserving pollinators—the birds, insects, and other creatures that are essential to food production as well as the health of plants across the globe. Finding solutions to pollinator decline requires a sound scientific understanding. But conservation isn't just science: in involves an interplay of policy, environmental attitudes, activism, economy, education, and history. In addition to the science, workable solutions must draw on an understanding of the economic, legal, and even cultural factors that contribute to the problem, and can affect the chances of solving it. In other words, thinking about pollinator conservation calls for an interdisciplinary approach. This seminar will use this issue to help you understand what’s involved in approaching an environmental question in an interdisciplinary way. We will bring together work from biology, social science, economics, law, and ethics, in order to explore the various forces that affect pollinators and impact how conservation happens. Along the way we will consider topics including

• ecological restoration

• novel ecosystems

• endangered species regulations

• agricultural economics

• cultural norms

• and environmental justice.

Our readings will represent a variety of perspectives and stakeholders, and will lead us toward work produced by interdisciplinary teams. Thus you will come away from this class not only with a better sense of why pollinators are in decline and how to conserve them, but also with an appreciation of how multiple types of knowledge are required to understand the issue, and of the challenge in synthesizing what you learn into a comprehensive view.

Electives

Majors take 15 hours of electives: 6 hours from the Interdisciplinary category, and 9 hours from the Single-discipline category. For the Single-discipline category, you must take classes from three of these four groups: Natural Sciences (#NS), Social Sciences (#SS), Humanities (#HU), and Applied Disciplines (#AD). Minors take 6 electives: 6 hours from the Interdisciplinary category, and 3 hours from the Single-discipline category (from a group outside their major).

The table will show ten course listings at a time. Click arrows to sort each column, or use the search box to find specific courses (e.g. enter category key, topic, or other term).
