What is health promotion?

Health promotion is a discipline that seeks to improve the health of individuals and communities through education, behavior change, and environmental improvement. Health promotion draws from several corresponding disciplines, such as psychology, sociology, biological and clinical sciences, marketing, and management to help individuals and communities change health behaviors and improve environments.

Our health promotion curriculum focuses on the development, implementation, and evaluation of programs designed to help individuals and communities adopt and maintain healthy lifestyles. Students learn about theories of behavior change that are particularly useful for helping individuals and organizations decrease the health-related consequences of higher-risk lifestyles and behaviors. Students also learn the science behind planning and evaluating health programs designed to help and educate individuals and communities.
