Frederick B. Swan Scholarship

The Swan Scholarship was established in 2003 by Evelyn Swan in honor of her brother, Frederick B. Swan.

"I am studying a double-major in mathematics and astrophysics, and it has been very helpful in my physics courses to have a firm mathematical basis behind some of the topics covered in physics.

"I really enjoyed the "Physical Mathematics 1" course, which I took last semester, because it helped to explain the mathematics behind the differential equations I have seen this semester in my Physical Mechanics course.

"As I move forward in my career, having a math major will continue to be very useful as an aid in my astrophysics career, as well as being able to explain more advanced topics in mathematics which I have only worked with in very limited ways thus far, like graph theory. I look forward to the next two years of the math major."

"I transferred to the University of Oklahoma from the University of Nevada, Reno. I am currently majoring in Mathematics, minoring in both Chemistry and Chinese.

"I originally entered college majoring in Biology to pursue medical school, however I always felt I had the heart for math. Eventually, I would like to become a high school math teacher as throughout high school, I tutored and helped peers in the subject. I realised that math is always the one class everyone hated, and I would love to change their perspectives. I believe that once the correct applications are learned, then you can solve an infinite variety of problems.

"My favourite classes so far have been the Calculus series as it has demonstrated the ability to not only find the position, acceleration, and velocity of an object, but has also explained the use of slope from previous math classes. Along with that, Calculus has also taught me that you can rotate shapes and find their volumes using derivatives and integrals, something I find extremely entertaining. Thanks Pythagoras!"

Jake Weaver

Jake Weaver

"I'm Jake, a junior math student here at OU.  I've always been interested in math from a young age, and always looked up new concepts online to satisfy my curiosity. I have had a great time here at OU, and I've made a lot of progress in my learning, but also a lot of friends in my degree.

"My dream is to get my doctorate in math and be a professor at a university.  To do this, I've started research, with a reading project with Dr. Muller here at OU.  In addition, I plan to attend an REU this summer."

Hannah Carey

Hannah Carey

"My name is Hannah Carey. I am currently finishing up my junior year as a math major. I fell in love with math at an early age and have always been fascinated with the way math works. I decided in high school after taking BC Calculus that I was going to be a math major.

"I recently have been working with Dr. Sepideh Stewart with research in math education, specifically students' problems with school Algebra in Calculus. I really have enjoyed working with Dr. Stewart and have become very interested in pursuing a masters in math education in hopes of one day teaching at the university level.

"I have loved taking courses such as: calculus, ordinary differential equations, and linear algebra. I'm grateful for such an amazing opportunity to learn at such an amazing university."

Marcus Ake

Marcus Ake

"My name is Marcus Ake, and I am a sophomore majoring in Meteorology, Mathematics, and German with minors in Broadcast Meteorology and Physical Geography!

"Ever since a tornado narrowly missed my Kindergarten home, I have been absolutely infatuated with Meteorology! As I grew up, my love for the weather only expanded through math science, so much so that I decided I wanted to pursue a degree in mathematics as well!

"I hope to use my Mathematics degree to aid my research in Meteorology, specifically in the realm of developing more accurate functions and models for predicting the weather! Coming from a first generation American, first generation college student household, my parents have taught me the importance of education from a young age, and I am so excited to see where the world takes me! Who knows? Maybe I’ll finally figure out what a meteorologist does when it snows: make snow angles 📐❄️!"

"My journey in mathematics does not actually begin with the math. It begins with the physics. When I came to university, I initially wanted to pursue a double major in physics and biochemistry, but eventually found that physics was what I wanted to do with my life. Almost every one of the tools that we use to probe the universe is mathematical in nature though, and so I decided to pursue a second major in math. After all, a worker who does not know their tools is no worker at all.

"So far, I have applied the knowledge from my math courses in research with the Department of Chemistry and the Department of Physics, investigating the behavior of single-molecule layers on metal crystals. As for the courses themselves, I have found myself particularly enjoying courses with potential applications for my research such as linear algebra and abstract algebra. Eventually, I hope to use this degree as part of an application to graduate school in physics, specifically with a focus on quantum information and quantum computing."

Heather Willmott

Heather Willmott

"I'm Heather Willmott and I'm currently a freshman at OU studying math with a music minor.

"Here at OU, I've been involved in student organizations such as the Union Programming Board, the Integrity Council, and Public Health Discussions Club.

"Some of my favorite math courses at OU have been Discrete Math and Differential Equations. After graduating, I plan to pursue a career in biostatistics."

Macintyre Syrett

"I'm double majoring in Math and Meteorology. I’ve always loved math; I’ve competed in math competitions since middle school, and I’ve enjoyed all the math courses I’ve taken. So far, my favorite courses have been Physical Math and Discrete Math, but I’m looking forward to taking more and seeing if that changes.

"I haven’t done any math research yet, but I was able to get a research position analyzing rainfall in Hurricane Sally with Dr. Jeffrey Basara. Being a freshman, I still have plenty of time to get involved in math research, and I’m looking forward to where my degrees take me. "

Tien Tran

Tien Tran chose to major in Mathematics because she enjoys thinking logically and abstractly. She is passionate about the field. Even while in a state of confusion after her wisdom teeth surgery, she talked about math.

Tien has recently become interested in undergraduate mathematics education research, and she gave a presentation which proposed a lesson plan to address students' conceptual difficulties while teaching the topic of subspaces.

Tien hopes to attend a graduate school program in either Mathematics or Data Science.

Chad Cotton

Chad Cotton

"Since I was very young, Mathematics has always been my favorite subject in school. It was only natural I continued to follow my passion and become a Mathematics Major at OU, which has been one of the most rewarding experiences in my life.

"I hope to, in the future, continue engaging in the field of Mathematics in tandem with Economics in an analyst role."

"I am currently pursuing degrees in mathematics and ballet performance. Upon graduating from OU, I intend on fulfilling one of my dreams of dancing professionally, however, I understand that injuries are prevalent within the art form and most dancers retire between the ages of 30 and 40.

"After my dancing career ends, I plan on focusing on one of my other passions, math, by returning to school to acquire a master’s degree. Along with mathematics, I am quite interested in health; therefore, I believe epidemiology would be a fitting field that marries both topics.

"With a graduate degree, I hope to work at a research center or in a lab setting and make an impact by identifying patterns of disease and with the recent events involving the Coronavirus, I feel confident that pursuing this profession will allow me to truly make a difference."
