Mission

The Language Learning Center at the University of Oklahoma provides technology, resources, and an engaging environment in which students, faculty, instructors, and visitors are supported in their language acquisition pursuits. The LLC creates opportunities for more meaningful contact with international languages through cultural programming, partnerships, technology, access to specialized resources, and modular, flexible, active learning spaces.

The Language Learning Center provides a variety of equipment to help students and faculty more effectively engage in the target language, both inside and outside of the classroom. Whether you need to shoot, edit, and produce a video project for your language class, prepare a presentation, record a conversation or an interview, explore new language learning apps individually or in groups, or share online content with others, we have the equipment. Our equipment pool is always changing to meet the shifting expectations of language learners. Come in today and ask one of our friendly LLC student specialists to see how the Language Learning Center can help.

The University of Oklahoma offers several options for students wishing to pursue language study or to demonstrate knowledge in a particular language. Please see the following guide for information about which option is best for you.

NOTE: You CAN NOT complete this exam from home. Please email llc@ou.edu if you are from out of state or have a condition preventing you from coming onto campus to test. Also, the language placement test does NOT grant academic credit for language classes. The test is used to evaluate your language skill level ONLY for placement into a specific language class.

By entering my student identification number and my name below, I affirm that I will complete the language placement exam to the best of my ability and in good faith, in order to place into the level that most accurately corresponds to my skill level in the selected language. On my honor, I affirm that I will neither give nor receive inappropriate aid in the completion of this exam. I understand that the Department of Modern Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics reserves the right to consider all relevant factors when making the final placement decision.

For academic credit you can take CLEP exams or Advanced Standing Exams through the Center for Independent and Distance Learning.

Please allow 24 - 72 business hours to process the background waivers.

To be filled out by Student:

I certify by submitting this form that I have had less than two years of instruction in the language noted (including ZERO years) or it has been more than five years since I have taken a language course. I understand that if this is not the case, I can be charged with academic misconduct for giving incorrect information for academic advantage.

NOTE: Native and heritage speakers, please see official Native Speaker Policy by clicking here.

For departmental purposes, the Department of Modern Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics defines a native speaker of a language as any individual who has been raised in a family and a society where this language is habitually used for everyday communication and is the language of instruction in the student's school system.

To schedule a native speaker exam or foreign language requirement approval (FLRA), please contact the OU CIDL testing center, or you can schedule here:

A native speaker may not enroll in any undergraduate skills course in his or her native language, with the single exception of the course in Advanced Composition 3423, but may earn credit by advanced standing exams. Undergraduate skills courses include all courses in which the primary goal is language usage, i.e., all elementary and intermediate courses, and all composition, conversation and phonetics courses. However, this does not preclude native speakers from earning credit by advanced standing exams.

If a student seeks a teaching certificate with a major in his or her native language, the student must complete the advanced composition course, as well as all literature and civilization courses or equivalent required for the major. If additional hours are needed in order to meet the 35 hour certification requirement for a language major, the student may apply for retroactive credit for as many hours of skills courses as are needed to meet that requirement, provided that a grade of B or higher was earned in Advanced Composition. Such hours are entered on the student's transcript, but under no circumstances may they count toward any MLLL degree program at the University of Oklahoma.
