Profile:

Dustin Condren is a scholar of 20th-century Russian culture and earned his Ph.D. in Slavic Languages and Literatures from Stanford University. He joined OU's Department of Modern Languages, Literature, and Linguistics in 2019.

Dr. Condren’s research centers on the literary and visual cultures of the early Soviet period, with a particular focus on the material and conceptual processes involved in the production of works of art. His monograph An Imaginary Cinema: Sergei Eisenstein and the Unrealized Film will be published by Cornell University Press in fall 2024. Concerned with questions of the unfinished, of failure, and of the infinite, the book tracks the remnants of Eisenstein’s unmade projects against the backdrop of the political realities of early Stalinist Russia and the practical contingencies of filmmaking. Condren is an active translator of Russian and has published multiple book-length translations; he is also a professional photographer, having made portrait and conceptual work within the music industry for over a decade.

Dr. Condren regularly teaches courses on nineteenth-and twentieth-century prose, poetry, and dramatic literature; Russian and Soviet cinema; film history and theory; and upper-level Russian language.
