Profile

Jie Zhang is Associate Professor of Chinese Pedagogy and Applied Linguistics in the Department of Modern Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics. She earned her Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics from the Pennsylvania State University in 2011. Before her tenure at OU, she had previously taught at the Defense Language Institute, The Pennsylvania State University, and University of Science and Technology Beijing.

Professor Zhang’s research interests encompass second language acquisition, foreign language pedagogy, and Chinese as a second language (CSL). Using learner corpora, she has investigated CSL learners’ acquisition of Chinese classifiers, resultative verb compounds, and verb complement construction of manners. She adopts a sociocultural approach in her investigations of second language acquisition. Additionally, she has been developing dynamic assessment tools that diagnose and support second language listening, reading, and speaking development. At present, she is working on a book manuscript that employs the principles of concept-based language instruction in the field of CSL. Furthermore, she has served as the Project Coordinator at the Center for Advanced Language Proficiency Education and Research (CALPER) at The Pennsylvania State University.

Professor Zhang regularly teaches intermediate and advanced Chinese language courses for the Chinese program. In addition, she teaches MLLL4813/5813 Techniques of Teaching Foreign Language for MLLL and TESL5123 Second Language Acquisition for the MA TESOL program. She is currently chairing the MA TESOL Steering Committee.

Within her profession, Professor Zhang serves as the Executive Director of The Chinese Language Teachers Association, USA (CLTA-USA). Prior to this, she had served as President of Oklahoma Chinese Language Teachers Association, Board Member of the CLTA-USA, as well as Board Member of the Oklahoma Foreign Language Teachers Association. She is on the editorial board of the journal Language and Sociocultural Theory. She is an ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview Tester of Chinese with Full Certification.
