Profile
Luis Cortest is Professor of Spanish. From 1992-1999 he served as Chair of the Department of Modern Languages, Literatures and Linguistics at the University of Oklahoma. Professor Cortest studied at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and the Universidad Complutense de Madrid before he was awarded the Ph.D. in Medieval Hispanic literatures at the University of California, Berkeley. His principal interests include: Spanish religious writers of the sixteenth century, medieval Spanish literature, the history of Spanish Scholasticism and Natural Law Theory.
Selected Publications
Professor Cortest has published a critical edition of the Arte para servir a Dios by Fray Alonso de Madrid (1989). He is also the editor of a collection of studies on the colonial Mexican writer, Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz (1989), and a festschrift for Jose Durand (1994). In 2008 he published The Disfigured Face: Traditional Natural Law and its Encounter with Modernity, a study of medieval and Early Modern Natural Law tradition. He has also published a modern edition of the sixteenth-century Regimiento de la vida by Moshe Almosnino (2011). In 2017, he published Philo's Heirs: Moses Maimonides and Thomas Aquinas, a systematic study of how the philosophical method established by Philo of Alexandria served as the model for almost all Christian, Islamic and Jewish religious philosophers from the second century A.D. until the time of Baruch Spinoza in the seventeenth century.
