Department-wide colloquium

Typically held on Thursdays, 3.45-4.45pm, during the semester. Colloquia typically start during the second week of the semester; the colloquium slot during the first Thursday of the semester is typically set aside for the discussion of the qualifiers (this is a faculty only event). Seminars and Journal Club Meetings

  • Each fall semester, the department runs a “research night” series (typically on Wednesdays, 6-7.30pm), where 2-3 faculty members introduce their research. The event features free pizza and is particularly suited for first-year graduate students and undergraduate students who are looking to join a research group or want to obtain on overview of the research conducted in the P&A department. The series is organized by the Graduate Studies Committee (currently chaired by Prof. Mike Strauss (strauss@ou.edu)).
  • AMO journal club meetings are typically held on Tuesdays, 9-10am, during the semester. Currently, there is no website for the AMO Journal Club (contact Prof. Arne Schwettmann at schwettmann@ou.edu for more information).
  • Astro journal club meetings are typically held on Fridays, 12.30-1.30pm, during the semester. In-person meetings tend to be held in NH302 (please contact Hunter Campbell at hunter.m.campbell-1@ou.edu for more information).
  • CMP journal club meetings are organized by Prof. Bumm; please reach out to Prof. Bumm at bumm@ou.edu for more information.
  • CQRT seminars are typically held on Tuesdays, 1.15-2.15pm, or Fridays, 12.15-1.15pm, during the semester. See CQRT Seminars (in person events tend to be held in LH105).
  • HEP journal club meetings are typically held on Thursdays, 1.30-2.30pm, during the semester (please contact Prof. Kuver Sinha at kuver.sinha@ou.edu for more information).

Faculty meetings:

Faculty meeting invitations are extended to the P&A faculty and two G-PSI representatives (graduate students). Meetings are typically held on Tuesdays, 3.45-4.45pm. Meetings are called on an as-needed basis.

Regular Social Events

These events are typically announced through pa-everybody-l@lists.ou.edu:

  • Pre-Covid, the department held daily Tea and Cookie get-togethers at 3.30-4pm (on colloquium days, the Tea and Cookie time was moved to 3.15-3.45pm).
  • The department typically hosts a “welcoming new members of the department” event in late August/early September. This departmentwide event is put on by the Department Chair.
  • The SPS started a new tradition in fall 2021, namely a poster presentation by undergraduate students + departmental picnic in the courtyard between Nielsen Hall and Lin Hall.
  • The SPS frequently organizes a Pumpkin drop around Halloween.
  • The department typically hosts a Thanksgiving dinner (frequently, the event is held on the Thursday prior to the Thanksgiving break, roughly noon-2pm). This departmentwide event is put on by the Department Chair.
  • The department typically hosts a “Share your favorite sweets” in the middle of December.
  • The department typically hosts an award ceremony at the end of the Spring semester (Thursday before Final’s week). This departmentwide event is put on by the Chair of the Undergraduate Studies Committee, in consultation with the Department Chair and Chair of the Graduate Studies Committee.
  • Pre-Covid, G-PSI hosted a departmentwide picnic in May/June in one of the local parks.
  • Lunar Sooners regularly hosts star parties throughout the year. See http://observatory.ou.edu for a schedule.
