End of Program Assessments

Assessment Options

All graduate students at the University of Oklahoma are required to complete an end of program assessment (EPA) to receive their degree. Each discipline decides what EPA(s) is/are appropriate for their field. SLIS offers MLIS students these choices of EPA:

  • ePortfolio, students must submit in fall or spring (not summer)
  • Master's thesis
  • Students who started the MLIS before fall 2021 also have the option of the previous version of the Portfolio, or the Comprehensive Examination

Few students choose to write a thesis, but if you choose this option it requires you to work closely with a faculty advisor who will help in assembling your committee and will chair your defense. This faculty advisor may be the one originally assigned to you upon your entry into the program, or one that you have asked to work with later in your program.  If you choose the thesis option, 2 of your required 12 master's courses will be thesis hours so you will complete 30 hours of regular courses and 6 hours of thesis.

You must declare your EPA choice by the end of your first semester in the program through submitting your Program Planning Form. Your EPA choice requires your advisor's approval.

End of Program Assessment Materials

Mid-semester, the semester before you plan to take your end-of-program assessment, you must fill out and submit this Graduate College form (or this one for accelerated students). If you miss the deadline, you will have to petition be allowed to do your end-of-program assessment that semester.

ePortfolio - for students who started the MLIS in fall 2021 and forward.

In your first semester in the MLIS program, please enroll yourself in the ePortfolio Canvas course and follow the instructions there for beginning your ePortfolio process.
