Final Presentation Guidelines

The CEO of your company recently read a brief article in an in-flight magazine about one of the following technologies (you choose the technology, or suggest one of your own):
Web Conferencing Services Videoconferencing Software Multimedia Authoring Software
Videoconferencing Services Web-based Training Software Hand-Held Computers & PDAs
Electronic Whiteboards Web-based Presentation Software Image/photo-editing software
Web-authoring Software Videoconferencing Systems DVD-Authoring Systems
Presentation Software Digital Asset Management Software Digital Video Editing Software
She now wants you to investigate that technology and prepare a presentation on it.  She wants you to answer the following questions:
  Questions/Content
1. What exactly is this technology?  How is it defined in online technology glossaries?  How is it defined by the companies that make products for this technology?  And how can you best explain it in your own words?
2. Into what categories can this technology area be divided?  For example, videoconferencing systems are commonly divided into Desktop, Group and Room or Permanent categories.
3. What equipment and software are required?
4. In what ways are businesses using this technology, i.e. what are they doing with it?
5. What are the benefits of doing so?
6. What are the drawbacks of doing so?
7. In the particular category of the technology area you have chosen, which products have been identified as the leaders by buyer's guides and/or product comparisons that have been published (online or in print) regarding this technology within the last 2 years?  Provide links to these on your slides.
8. By what set of features or criteria should a business evaluate and compare products in this technology area?
9. Using those features or criteria from above, examine each of the three leading products:
  • Describe the first product, including its name, how long it has been on the market, the name of its manufacturer, the product's features and system requirements.
  • Show a photo of the product, its box and/or a screenshot of the product in use.
  • Point out any features that are unique to this product and how those features might benefit your audience.
  • What specific case studies or lists of customers are available via the manufacturer's website?  (Include links on your slides)
  • Mention any companion software, software add-on, optional hardware, or additional services offered by the manufacturer for use with this product.
  • Describe what technical support is available.
  • List any awards this product has won.  Summarize the findings of any reviews about it.
  • List any 3rd party companion software, software add-on, optional hardware, or additional services available for use with this product.
  • Finally, list the cost of the product and where it can be purchased for the lowest price.

10. Display a slide with a side-by-side comparison table showing the three leading products in your chosen technology area, listing their features, and identifying which is the best, and why.
11. What are the three best-selling books about this technology as ranked by Amazon.com?  Display photos of the book covers as well as their titles, authors and year of publication.

What journals, newsletters, professional publications, user groups and online tutorials are available regarding this technology?  Provide links to these on your slides.

  Other Stuff
12. Presentations should be no longer than 15 minutes, excluding Q&A.
13. Your presentation must be supported by PowerPoint slides.  Please design your slides for a bright room. You will not be allowed to dim the lights in the classroom.
14. Each team member must speak and must contribute to the creation of the slides.  You will be graded individually for this presentation.
15. For effective slide design and delivery skills, follow the Presentation Tips.  I will use this tip sheet as my grading form.
16. Images must pertain to your slide's title or a specific bullet point.  Be sure to show what you are telling about.  Use photo quality images, not clipart.  When discussing products, show photos of actual products.
17. Dress code is Business Professional.   (Slacks, dress shirt and tie for males. Suit, slacks or dress for females.)
18. I will have a computer, projector, VCR and DVD player in the classroom. If you will need additional equipment, please let me know one week in advance.

You are welcome to include product demonstrations, but please get instructor's approval for additional time at least three days in advance.  If you wish to use the college's computers to conduct product demonstrations, please make arrangements with the college's lab and classroom computing supervisor, Mr. Nick Larchey, in room AH-110 at least one week in advance.

19. After the presentation, please turn in your PowerPoint file on a disk and include an additional slide at the end listing each team member's contribution, level of participation, and allotted speaking time.  I will deduct 5 points for each 15 seconds that a presenter runs over that allotted time.  This project will be an individual grade, not a team grade.
