Individual Presentation Guidelines

1. Please prepare an individual presentation over any topic that you are comfortably familiar with (as long as the subject matter is rated PG and is appropriate to discuss in a college classroom.)
2. The maximum time limit is 5 minutes, excluding Q&A.  I will deduct 5 points for every 15 seconds of overtime, so practice and K.I.S.S.
3. A minimum of five PowerPoint slides are required - one Title slide, three Body slides, and one Summary slide.  (You may have more than five slides, of course.)  Also consider bringing props.
4. Follow the Presentation Tips and the outline below.  I will use them as my grading form.
5. Photos must pertain to what each slide is about.  Remember to show what you are telling about.

Outline

Good presentations have 3 parts:  1. Introduction; 2. Body; 3. Conclusion

I. Introduction

  • What is the topic of your presentation?
  • What is the overall point of your entire presentation?
  • What's in it for your audience?
  • What qualifies you to speak on this topic?
  • What are the Q&A ground rules?
  • What are you going to say to smoothly segue to the next slide?

II. Body

  • What is the main point of your first body slide?

  • What sub-points will you offer in support of this slide’s main point?

  • What will you say to summarize this slide? (So what?)

  • What are you going to say to smoothly segue to the next slide?

  • What are the main points of each of your middle body slides?

  • What sub-points will you offer in support of each slide’s main point?

  • What will you say to summarize each slide? (So what?)

  • What are you going to say to smoothly segue to the next slide?

  • What is the main point of your last body slide?

  • What sub-points will you offer in support of this slide’s main point?

  • What will you say to summarize this slide? (So what?)

  • What are you going to say to smoothly segue to the Summary slide?

III. Conclusion

  • What will you say to summarize and/or restate your main points without repeating the detailed sub-points?
  • How will you conclude your presentation and transition to Q&A?
  • What final send-off statement will you make after Q&A?
