Lesson 10  WebStudy  Distance Learning on the World Wide Web
Internet Navigator...  A Simplified Guide to Netscape GOLD

Low Resolution vs. High Resolution

For WebStudy (learning) purposes..., you should consider keeping your images relatively small. For Example the banner.gif image at the top of this page is 4K. in size. Small images take "less time" to transport over the Internet, and thus..., take less time to be displayed in your Netscape Viewer.

From experience..., viewers will not "sit and wait" minutes..., while large images "load" to their Browsers.

Low Resolution Images in the 50 to 250 dpi range are best. (dpi is Dots Per Inch)

For Example:  If your (computer) viewing screen is 768 X 1024 (that is 768 dots high, and 1024 dots wide) then that is the largest image you can see on your screen. (without having to use the scroll bars).

Normal (home) Video "Capture" is usually in the order of 72 dots per inch. The point being..., (larger) Higher Resolution Images are not always the "best choice" for the Internet! If you need a paper copy of an image..., High Resolution is what you want. A normal photograph is usually about 2250 dpi resolution. Most "Home" Printers are 300 to 600 dpi. You do the math!
